Sources have told NDTV that Chinese troops crossed over into Chumar sector in Ladakh region thrice - on July 16, 18, and 20 - in the last five days. On each of these occasions, the soldiers intruded about three kilometres into the Indian side and spent several hours before going back.

The reported incursions in Chumar come on the back of the Indian Army getting the go-ahead to raise a 50,000-strong Mountain Strike Corps along the border with China. The move is a major boost to the Army's war-fighting capabilities along the Line of Actual Control that has witnessed several instances of incursion by Chinese troops.

The first of these three reported incursions, in fact, coincided with the announcement of the new formation. Around 50 Chinese soldiers, riding on horses and ponies, reportedly entered Chumar on July 16 and stayed there till the 17th. Sources say they were carrying placards which asked Indian forces to leave the "occupied territories".

possible, at least on the Chinese Side,

as

anyone achieving General Rank has already participated in the CCP for some time.

But I digress.

I think the 'border incursion' was just a test, to see what the Indian Government and the Indian Military would do.

I'm not getting any sense it's just a camping excursion, for the holiday.

I just don't understand this. Why would China even care to test India? There's no threat from them as far as China is concerned. Its more like China is letting India knows who will be obeying the wishes of who going forward. Or maybe they're testing the reaction of the international community. You know, see who supports India.

Or maybe its just to whip up a little more nationalistic pride at home.

The Indian and Chinese governments have never actually sat down and agreed on a border. The Indians, at Independence, unilaterally decided that the border the British drew for them was the border. The Chinese unilaterally drew their own border and the two border perceived borders put significant chunks of territory in dispute.

As long as India maintained a security posture of leaving the disputed territories alone, China was content to let sleeping dogs lie. China, as part of its need to pacify Tibet, has built a sophisticated transportation network on the Chinese side. The Indian side is relatively undeveloped. But that is now changing, the Indian government has been slowly building its presence on the border. So now the Chinese intrude from time to time to remind the Indian government that they are still militarily superior.

Eventually, the Indians and the Chinese will have to sit down and agree on a border. But that won't happen until the Hindu nationalist party wins an election in India. They're seen as the patriotic ones, they can get away with giving the farm away - the current party in charge is already seen as weak on foreign affairs so they cant.

As an example - India has a much smaller border with Bangladesh. The border is a mess, there are heavily populated "enclaves" on both sides. Little pockets of populated land that are surrounded by the other country. The current government negotiated an agreement with Bangldesh to swap land. India absorbs some Bangladeshi enclaves, carves out Indian land and hands over to Bangladesh so they can have others. Bangladesh does the same. Ends in a much smoother and easier to administer line. Bangladesh has already approved the agreement. India has not. The bill is stuck in Indian parliament. The Hindu nationalists won't allow it. They're grandstanding on the border, raising up the flag on Bangladeshi land and inciting riots. Once the Hindu nationalists win, the bill will pass.
