It's a very confusing part of the world, where ethnicity is more a matter of tradition and self-identification, than genealogy.

This is a product of Zionism. It didn't use to be that way. Arab Jews always knew that they were Arabs, right up until the Zionist project began and started the process of indoctrinating them in the racist ideology that Arab Jews are not really Arab at all, but rather a separate ethnicity that is somehow more related to European Ashkenazi Jews (most of whom have little to no Middle Eastern blood.)

Zionism insists on calling Arab Jews "Mizrahim" or "Eastern" Jews, as if they are a related group - even though they come from different countries and are (for the most part) completely unrelated to each other.

Zionism pulls a similar ruse with the Palestinians - it designates the few Palestinians who managed to remain in Israel as simply "Arabs," as if they are a separate group from the rest of their people who live in the West Bank or Gaza, and even separate from the diaspora Palestinians who were driven out from the very same land - what is now Israel.

Zionism also considers the Druze to be a separate identity than "Arab," although they are definitely Arab.

It's completely bonkers.

But Arabs don't follow this ideology. They generally refer to Arab Jews by that very name - "Arab Jews." And Arabs consider their Arab ethnicity to definitely be a matter of genealogy, regardless of religion.

Here's the deal. I don't know what these guys need but they need a route to a real democracy. My worry about countries that have hit rock bottom is that they'll vote for someone that guarantees a route to prominence through religion or nationalism or some other form of pandering. Its exactly what Hitler did. I know they need time to figure it out but I don't want Egypt's people getting tricked into voting for another group that wants to control their freedoms.

Turkey had a solid run at it, for about 40 years.

Maybe Egypt could follow the same blueprint?

Democracy attempt in Egypt, redux. Of course, the US didn't get it right the first time either, and our Constitution is still a work in progress.
