How can it be a democracy when the results of a free and democratic election can be overturned by military coup ?

It appears from the poll, that the population of Egypt is more than happy to see the election overturned. It looks like most people in Egypt are looking forward to a "do-over".

Call it "buyer's remorse."

Democracy attempt in Egypt, redux. Of course, the US didn't get it right the first time either, and our Constitution is still a work in progress.

That attempt failed the moment the military deposed the elected president.

A coup by any other name...

I don't see why y'all have such a hard-on for democracy. Democratic or not, as long as Egypt is stable and predictable and not an enemy of Israel, I think it's all good.

Democracy is an ethnocentric concept not suited to non-Western countries.

Your bigotry has no place in this thread.

They need to be lulled into a democracy over a fairly long grace period. I don't think you can expect a repressed populace with nothing but their religious hopes to keep them going to vote for anything other than a religious leader.

New democracies should go with the parliamentary model where all it takes is a vote of no confidence and everybody gets to vote again. No coup necessary, just pay off politicians instead.

It would probably work better in the US as well. There really is no need for an executive separate from the legislature. Think of how much better John Bonner, or even Nancy Pelosi would have been running the executive functions of the government, rather than the current and prior occupant of the White House.

The news confirmed the coup was military though. Quite possibly the news were not aware of of the poll.

It can be both military, and popular. The two concepts are not mutually exclusive, especially in Egypt.

What a pompous response . I think you are the bigot trying to impose Western/American values on Egypt. Look what happened to Lawrence.

Egyptians are not Arabs.
