The Philippines is an English speaking country by the way.

Yes, that is a dialect that is mostly spoken there. Most written stuff is in English however.

I think it would be more factual to say that many many people there speak at least some English, especially in the city and those with education.

You are right . Tagalog is the national language, but even then not all speak it.

There are a host of other languages spoken in the provinces. More than 60 active if I remember correctly.

Speaking good English is kind of a status symbol there, and many educated people judge those who don't. Big business over there of Koreans coming to the Pi to learn English.

All the signs etc are in English. At least the ones I saw

My wife speaks Cebuano, Tagalog and Englsih . All three much better than I

That's so odd that there is such a diff between the two

Maybe ir/cr reflect more immigrants bringing over their family after being sponsored to PR by their employer?

I think some of it is the waves of previous immigration playing out... A few years ago there was a large influx of Somalian refugees.. It stands to reason that as they become LPRs and then citizens they would then petition to bring over family members.. I think Haitian numbers will become huge in the coming years.

I work with a large group of people from India (mostly men) and it does not occur to them to look stateside for a wife. They do tend to intermix more with the community so their kids will probably not be looking to India on the next go-round.

Very interesting. For some reason I have a memory of being told that some Spanish was spoken there form being controlled by Spain many years ago.
