My attorney is telling me that we need to efile the DS-156, and get a barcode on the form. Yet my fiance's sister had her K-1 interview 2 weeks ago and did not efile the form. Anyone else going through Bogota have any experience with this or at any other consul?? There is a place for a barcode on the form DS156, but she just left it blank....thanks

Dear g65nov,

The US Embassy in Bucharest posted on their website that starting November 1st 2006 they would only accept the online fillable DS-156 for whomever files for a NON-IMMIGRANT visa (that is the variant of DS-156 having a barcode on it). But the K1 is considered an Immigrant type of visa in Bucharest and it is placed into the corresponding category. For the latter applicants, they still accept the handwritten or typed forms (the ones without a barcode). It could be the same in Bogota. The best piece of advice is for you to call them or email them inquiring if they still accept the classical DS-156 for K1-visa applicants.

Oh, another point: the barcode is only generated when you press the "Continue" button, respectively save or print the DS-156 document. Otherwise it doesn't appear on the page.

g65nov,

Mis-understanding between you and the attorney on the meaning of the term 'efile'.

Fill out the electronic version of the DS-156 that you find on the DoS web site, click on a botton labelled 'Continue', and a completed form with a barcode on it will be generated. By scanning the barcode the consulate can bring up all of the information contained on the form, no need to re-enter it themselves.
