My wife got here on May 29th, and we just got married July 14th. We were going to go apply today to get it started but it's pouring out and we're just in a lazy mood after getting back from the our short but intensive honeymoon. Anything wrong with waiting until next week? I guess I already know there's no difference in now and Monday but I'm feeling guilty and need some positive vibes haha.

We're already gone to the courthouse and got the certified copy of the marriage license, now we need to do Social security and...? I guess I need to go back and look at the guides!

As long as her i94 is valid for at least 2 weeks when applying for SSN. She should be fine.

After that she can Apply for State ID too

You have until 2 weeks before the I-94 expires. One word of warning: You may want to file for the SSN in her maiden name and then go back and change it using the marriage certificate. The reason is most SSA people are poorly trained and do not know that you can use the Marriage Certificate as an official document for name change. All they are thinking about is the name in the SAVE database does not match the married name--for some reason they cannot look up the maiden name to do the verification and then do the name change. Just be prepared for this. If they give you too much grief, thank them and leave. Go home and send an e-mail to the main office on their website reciting what happened to you including the date, time, people's names and what they told you. You should get a response that you can take with you to train those employees.

Good luck,

Dave
