So, my girlfriend (I am a born US citizen) came to the US from the Philippines on a student visa. We met and the gears turned, and we decided our lives would be best spent together.

I've been looking around for information and the amount of twists and turns is daunting... can anyone just put this in layman's terms?

She's got a student visa and I'm a US citizen - where would we go from here? :help:

Thanks in advance...

detri,

To an immigration lawyer for a consultation. The lawyer will review the details of your situation with you and suggest appropriate courses of action. The odds are that you'll be happy about what you learn.

Since I'm a full-time student, I'll need a co-signor. My father is willing and able, is that fine? Are there any websites that'd have better information on what requirements I'd have to meet? I've got pictures of us together but that's about it so far :P

As Yodrak said, you should have a consultation with a lawyer. You need to make sure that there are no impediments to Adjustment of Status. You don't necessarily need a lawyer for the whole process, but it would be a smart move to make sure there are no complications you are unaware of at the beginning.

i'll check that out, thanks, anyone else? :)

Thanks, of course I should check with an imm. lawyer. I'd like to do some studying up, though, any decent sites?

None of those really helped... would she have to go back and we file for the K visa, or would we just get married and file for an adjustment of status from her student visa? There is nothing on the net really for this kind of information that I've found anyways...she's already living here on the student visa... And can someone answer this question: Can my father cosponsor her?

If a lawyer says that she is clear to Adjust Status - that would obviously be ideal so that you are not separated. No one here can answer that for you because we don't know all the details, and no one wants to take that risk. If the lawyer says okay, you should be good to go.

As long as your father meets the financial requirements and is a citizen or permanent resident he can be a cosponsor.

hope this helps.

Thank you, I'll get in touch with a lawyer JUST for a meeting, not having him/her do everything for me as I'm rather good with paperwork myself and don't trust anyone else :) Especially someone that's just doing it for money.

Another quick Q: She came here on a student visa. Would she have to finish a semester or something to prove intent? She starts within a few days and was wondering if we should wait for her semester to end then go for it, or just do it now.
