I actually wasn't asking rhetorically either. I genuinely want to know. How does one survive if their pension goes under and they weren't paying into social security?

Wait a minute. There's no way this is right. I pay into my pension (optional percentage) and insurance. I don't think people can opt out paying into socials security

Question, did your taxes "go up" this past January when the bush tax cuts went away?

Look it up. It's true. I was skeptical as well.

CalSTRS. I googled it. That is a trip. I've never heard of that. It returned 13.8% in the last fiscal year and 7.5% annually over 20 years. Pretty awesome. I would never guess a state like California would do something like that. I wonder how they got the feds to go along with not withholding social security?

CalSTRS has been around since 1913, that's a couple of decades before social security. So that's probably why they were allowed to stay out.

It's definitely a better payout than social security, but of course that's only an advantage IF they don't go under. If it goes under, then we are screwed because we haven't been paying into social security. So I'm not sure if I entirely like that. I would rather have security than a better payout. But I don't have a choice.

No, they did not go up. But they didn't go down 2% the past two years either, like it did for all of you.

I think signals are getting crossed. GandD was talking about the bush tax cuts that had nothing to do with Social Security. You're talking about the payroll tax holiday.

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. Oh right. Well that I don't know. I think we did get that. If the tax cuts were not to the FICA taxes, then yes we did. If they were, then we didn't.

The tax cuts were decreased payments to social security. That's the only line item of my check that changed.

That was the payroll tax holiday that Obama and congress instituted for 2011 and 2012 that expired this year.

ETA: The Bush tax cuts that expired were for individuals making over $400k a year I think.
