Conservatives donate more than Liberal

You also must have missed the part that the so-called conservative town that collected "more" money (never once did they say how much), is a religious town. The statistics the author spoke about included giving money to churches, which I think throws off the numbers entirely. Money going to churches doesn't all go to charity....

There is no comparison unless you correct for money given to churches that does not find it's way to charity.

There are so many churches and religious groups out there that do so much for communities. Is that not charity? What do you consider charity? A nutso group like PETA...

Anyway the same applies to most charities. There is a portion of the donation that is used to cover administration costs..

What I find disappointing is that if this is true having a charitable mind set is linked to religion. How sad.

Not ######. The fundamental of religions such as Christianity is helping others.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Here is the article discussing Who Gives and Who does not.

Yes I mad a mistake the liberal city was San Fransisco. Which makes it even worse considering how much people earn there.

The two cities compared are: Sioux Falls (66th highest paying city in the US) vs. San Francisco (2nd highest paying city in the US)

ap_salvation_061124_sp.jpg

The Salvation Army set up buckets at the busiest locations in each city — Macy's in San Francisco and Wal-Mart in Sioux Falls. Which bucket collected more money?

...

Liberals are said to care more about helping the poor; so did people in San Francisco give more?

It turns out that this idea that liberals give more…is a myth. Of the top 25 states where people give an above average percent of their income, 24 were red states in the last presidential election.

....

conservatives are 18 percent more likely to donate blood.

Earning more does not = having more. And I see you skipped the bit about people in San Francisco probably not at all interested in giving to the Salvation Army because of the charity's philosophy, this was not an unbiased "experiment"....why not something both cities would likely feel similarly about, for instance, something for Katrina victims?

Just because John Stossel, mouth piece of conservatism on ABC says it's so , doesn't make it so.

How can one claim God cares to judge a fornicator over judging a lying, conniving bully? I guess you would if you are the lying, conniving bully.

I think a more reasonable conclusion from this study would be people from small towns more like to give to charity soliciting on the street than people in big towns - i bet people in sioux falls are more likely to also say hello to strangers and leave their doors unlocked at night and let their children play in the streets. the comparison is ludicrous.

If it was a comparison between say, Houston and San Francisco, then maybe (even though the methodology and conclusions would still be flawed) this little exercise might mean something

This is a problem with idiots in the US. Why is a republican automatically labeled a conservative and a Democrat automatically labeled a liberal?

I don't know but these seem to be labels you use a lot.

The Death Penalty and the Iraqi war are vehemently opposed by the Catholic Chruch -- does this make them liberals?

No- not liberal, but PRO LIFE from conception to natural death.

So how does that jive for a Catholic who adheres rigidly to the Right?

That is a silly thought. Lives aren't run by politics but rather by morals. Unfortunately today, there are many politicians that call themselves by a certain title and then do not do what is right in the eyes of God. I vote for the lesser of evils, with Life being the number one issue on the ballot. The more Pro Life a politican is-whether Dem Rep or Ind gets my vote. But that is just me.

and to clarify further...

there are 126,000 abortions each day in the US and even on the most anti-Iraq war website the estimate for war deaths is 55,000 since the beginning of the war-so in other words if I had to choose between a candidate that is anti-war and pro-choice vs someone that is pro-war and pro-life, the second would get my vote, because they are more for the protection of human life.

That's exactly my point. How do you vote Pro Life if both parties endorse some form of destruction of human life?

JohnPaul II talked about our culture of death and that it isn't just these hot button issues (capital punishment, abortion, etc) that harbor a culture of death, but it extends to the quality of life for all humans - human rights are part of being Pro Life.

I responded to that in my previous post. I think I was pretty clear. Lesser of two evils. No one party or candidate has ever been perfect-at least I haven't met them.

Good, because I've heard more than on one occasion of Pro Life voters saying the choice is clear. It's not. Nor has it ever been. Even if you are a single issue voter, there is no one party that represents a true 'Pro Life' stance.

there aren't too many politicians whose pro-life stance extends to opposition to the death penalty and the iraq war, so they would be at odds with the official position of the Roman Catholic Church. to pretend abortion matters more than the other issues would be a kind of "cafeteria catholicism" and moral relativism old-fashioned catholics supposedly reject

And the social justice position of the church is at odds with free market capitalism

I totally agree. You can't be Catholic and have it both ways. He asked how I would vote not what my personal position was.
