You can apply for SSN right now but if you are planning to take your husband's last name, remember to go and have it update once you receive your AoS. In my case, I took my hubby's name and I waited to get my EAD to get my SSN. And about the I94 I read that now is electronic, when I came here a year ago was a white paper stapled to my passport. Besides that, welcome to this beautiful country enjoy your new life here

Take your passport, i94 printout, USCIS letter (if you have one), birth certificate and SS form (get it online and pre fill it out) for a card to the SS office, (VJ says wait two weeks) . They will send you a card in about two weeks. When you get your card, ASAP get a state ID, Learners permit or DL if it is available in your state of HI. www.ssa.gov Remember Google is your friend for this information.

APPLYING FOR A HAWAII ID CARD DMV.com Hawaii

  1. Locate the Office of Motor Vehicles nearest you, as you will have to apply for the ID card in person.
  2. Complete the State ID Application Form.
  3. Bring proper identification as stated on the ID form. Different identification has to be provided for US Citizen, US Nationals and Non US Citizens
  4. You must also provide your original Social Security card.
  5. Pay the ID card application fee, currently $15.00 (for those who are up to 65 years of age). If you are 65 and above, the fee is $10.00. Cash is accepted

You can do a name change when you apply for a green card easily.

I don't think so, not anymore at least. Someone else can certainly correct me if I'm wrong.

I totally apologize about the I-94, I didn't know it was updated at all. But then thanks for the info!

One is as though nothing is a miracle.

  • 2 weeks later...

Aloha from Maui,

I currently am a Green Card holder & will share with you my experience, in the state of HAWAII.

*Lucky for you that you are on Oahu, as mostly all things government related are done through the Honolulu office*.

#1: Applied for SSN two weeks after arriving into USA.

#2A: Marraige licence; needed to get married. (ASK how you get a copy of the CERTIFICATE [different from licence]).

#2B: Married . (ASK about getting a copy of your married certificate. Sometimes you can print a varified copy right off the internet).

#3: Recieved married certificate = Changed name on SS card.

#4: State ID: as stated above, see State link for details. You'll need your married certificate & SS card for that. DON'T forget anything! & go early or wait all day.

#5: Drivers Licence: Multiple choice 30 questions. I read over the hand book, but this website was AWESOME & had all the questions & correct answers http://www.pixi.com/~creativs/autohome/autohome.htm#Overview *You're allowed 6 wrong. I got 1 wrong*.

DO apply for your SSn, before you get married. A name change is easy once you get your married certificate.

The important thing is to get the process started.

*When you apply, they may tell you to wait until after married; don't listen. You understand that you have to go back there for a name change; no big deal. And you have a long wait before you get your EAD/AP. And by the time that comes, your Green Card will hopefully come soon after. I didn't even use my EAD/AP card.

Okay, good luck to you! *PS- Believe it or not, cell phones were okay @ the USCIS in Honolulu! Your just not suppose to talk on them, but you can have them. People where actually texting & taking pictures! *

Best of luck to you

Aloha
