Hi everyone,

My visa interview is at 9:00 tomorrow morning (it is already midnight here in the UK) and I have read the fine print and realised that nowhere on my birth certificate and nowhere on it does it have my parents names. I believe this is what is considered a 'short version' and everywhere I have read says it is not acceptable.

My fiancée has travelled all the way from America and intends to attend the interview with me. I simply cannot believe I have not seen this before. We are both devastated and in tears of distress.

So please does anyone know if there is any place whatsoever we can get an acceptable birth certificate online, overnight or get away with the 'short version'.

We are willing to do anything, overnight libraries, online form, parents passports, pretty much anything.

We cry out for your help.

Many thanks,

Mark & Markie

You can usually get a certified birth certificate the same day by applying in person at the borough council office, however you still wouldnt have it in time for your 9am appointment, would be by 3:30pm same day. Depending on which borough you were registered with when you were born. For example below I have pasted a link to Enfield council.

http://www.enfield.gov.uk/info/663/registration-copy_certificates/741/certificates_for_birth_death_marriage_and_civil_partnership

I am not sure if they will accept the short version birth certificate or how lenient they are in this area, hopefully someone else can help you there.

:) hope that helped a little.

How long since petition mailed...

Last December my wife had her interview in Ankara, her birth certificate was translated, but we were missing some pages of the translation. She did not translate them because they did not have any information listed on them. Her Birth Certificate also lists things like marriage, birth of children and even her death. At the interview, she was told she was approved, but it was pending us submit the completed translated birth certificate. We found a translator and returned with the completed copy to the Embassy the next day. Then 5 days later she received her visa. I suggest you figure where you can get the "long version" of your birth certificate and have a plan to obtain it, hopefully it will be like our situation where we easily obtained the necessary information and we were really only delayed by one day.

You're right. Some countries issue short-form certificates as the norm (the UK and Canada, off the top of my head) and they are not acceptable for US immigration purposes.

You can order a long-form online at the General Register Office: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp but the fastest you can get them is around 48 hours: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/most_customers_want_to_know.asp#PriorityService

Order one now and you will hopefully have it by the end of the week. They won't be able to issue your visa without it, but it should only delay matters for a few days, with luck.

You cannot "get around" the requirements.

Worst case, they'll tentatively approve you anyway, and hold your passport for processing until you send them the long one, or have you reschedule the interview for a few weeks time. It won't cause a denial it itself.

And just in case someone comes across this thread in future: it's not in the fine print. Birth cert is specified on the list of required docs for interview, and it says in the regular print that short is not acceptable: http://london.usembassy.gov/application_documents.html
