Report: Stevie Wonder Boycotting Fla. Until Stand Your Ground Law Repealed

“I decided today that until the ‘Stand Your Ground’ law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again,” Wonder said in Quebec City according to the Huffington Post.

Wonder took it a step further and said he would refuse to perform in any state or part of the world where a stand your ground law exists.

“The truth is that for those of you who’ve lost in the battle for justice, wherever that fits in any part of the world; we can’t bring them back,” Wonder said according to the Huffington Post. “What we can do is we can let our voices be heard. And we can vote in our various countries throughout the world for change and equality for everybody. That’s what I know we can do.”

I applaud his efforts, he is my favorite artist.

I think that SYG is on paper a good law, the problem is it's used in the wrong context when the only witness is the one left alive. I remember back in 2008(I think) when they were rollling it out for the first time, a lot of folks didn't like it. And this was just white people, no one saw how bad it would be for minorities.

I think that SYG is on paper a good law...

I disagree. It's a bad law. A law that encourages people to run towards trouble with a gun in their hand. A law that says, it is okay to put yourself in harms way and then shoot yourself out of it. It's a stupid law that encourages stupid people to inflict harm on others. It has caused homicides to increase in the state of Florida. Justifiable homicides have tripled. We had well under 900 homicides in 2005. Then, that year, SYG was enacted. Suddenly there were more than 1,100 murders in 2006, over 1,200 in the following year, close to 1,200 the next and still over 1,000 the year after. Despite homicides having decreased nationally, we're still above the number of homicides that we had when SYG was enacted. SYG was really just another solution in search of a problem. Only this one has cost hundreds of lives already in this state.
