Why do I need to take a Police Certificate to the medical?

I have already submitted my Police Certificate to the NVC and I'm case complete so It must be Ok, in fact, in my Email it says 'O The NVC sent this form or document to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate'

I haven't got another one so it looks like I'm stuffed, medical is next Friday

It's a way for them to find out if you've had any drug related convictions, I assume?

You can order another police certificate. There's an option for premium (2 working day) processing.

http://www.acro.police.uk/uploadedFiles/Police%20Certificate%20Application%20Form%20-%20ENGLISH%20-%20July%202013.pdf

Or if you had it requested less than 3 months ago: http://www.acro.police.uk/Police_Certificates_FAQs.aspx

I have lost my Police Certificate, how do I get another copy?

If you have lost your Police Certificate, or require another copy within 3 months of submitting the original application, ACRO can reproduce the original Police Certificate for a fee of £6.00. Please note that the Police Certificate will only show the original date of production, not the date that you requested the replacement copy, and so you may wish to check that this will be accepted by the Embassy, High commission, Consulate or other organisation.
If you require another copy and 3 months have passed since you made your initial application, you will be required to submit a fresh application with supporting documentation and the full fee.

Did someone inform you that you needed to bring one for the medical? I have never heard of anyone in this forum needing one for this step.. My husband didn't require one for his medical in Amman.

For who to find out?

Huh? "Them" - the medical doctor? I'm not sure what you're asking, sorry. :(

I assume the medical doctor would like to see a police certificate to understand if the person they're assessing has had any convictions that are likely to cause them to have to answer yes to questions about drug abuse etc. (since that's the sort of thing someone might try to hide).

During the medical, the doctor will even reconfirm "Have you had any trouble with the law?" or some such statement.

It's required for the medical in London. http://photos.state.gov/libraries/unitedkingdom/164203/cons-visa/iv018a_medical.pdf

I've just called the London US Embassy and told them that the NVC have processed my Police certificate, it's on it's way to them and I don't have another. I actually do have another but can't find it anywhere!!!!! and they said that's OK. Just tell the guys at the medical that the embassy already have it because the NVC passed it to them.

So, I'm assuming that the Doctor doesn't actually need any information from it at all?

Fair enough. I was only guessing at a reason why they might want it - I sometimes wonder if it's just a blocker to stop booking their medicals too early. It is ordinarily required though (as you'll no doubt have seen on the embassy website and the pdf above).

Yes I agree, I know it is required, I did order two copies, sent one off to NVC and kept the other to take to medical, but I can't bloody find it!!!! lol

I had wondered why we needed to take it to medical when other countries don't.

I even called the NVC and asked them why I needed to take it to medical and they didn't know, they said to discuss it with the consulate.

This is not a USCIS, NVC, or Embassy decision.

When the new guidelines came out In June 2010, the Knightsbridge clinic started requesting to see police certificates. See 2010 Technical Instructions for Physical or Mental Disorders with Associated Harmful Behaviors and Substance-related Disorders for Panel Physicians http://www.cdc.gov/immigrantrefugeehealth/exams/ti/panel/mental-panel-technical-instructions.html

See page 8

Mental Health Examination

Observation alone is not sufficient to assess an applicant.

And further down:

Medical History

The panel physician should review the applicants Medical History and Physical Examination Worksheet (DS-3026) and available medical records. To fully investigate the applicants past medical history, the panel physician, when possible, should

-- Obtain other relevant records, such as police, military, school, and employment, that might provide

a history of harmful behavior associated with physical or mental disorders.

--Ask accompanying family members for information about the applicant regarding any military,

police, school or occupational problems, or social dysfunction.

--Ask about mental disorders in the family and, when appropriate, about signs of mental problems or

odd behaviors.

--Ask about any use of drugs and medicines.

--Ask about harmful behaviors.

Knightsbridge Doctors clinic in London apparently has chosen to comply with the above charge by viewing the police report as one way of knowing of any drug or alcohol related incidents, or fights, or assaults which might aid them in determining mental health/addictions in the client. Their other options could have been to request school or employment records or interview your family.

This isn't for the embassy, so telling them "the embassy said it's okay because they have the police report already" doesn't seem like a good answer from the misinformation line. Just tell Knightsbridge you mailed it off and don't have it. If they think you look pretty stable, I think they could say it's okay. This is only a tool for their assessment. They could also say they will hold your results until you provide one. You'll find out when you go.

I have just nearly completed 24 years in the Royal Navy and will be picking up all my medical records from the Sickbay tomorrow, so hopefully that should suffice because if I had any disorders either physical or mental, then the Navy would know about it!!!!!

If it was me I'd get the police cert, they use it at the appointment for the reasons already stated ie drink and drug abuse and mental illness, without it they can't complete the medical. If it was me I wouldn't risk having to spend 2 x £200+ because I didn't take it. That's just my thought! Good luck with your application :)

I would go without one and wing it. It's just one tool suggested. Surely Mr. Royal Navy can convince them. Prior to June 2010, they did the assessment without. They wouldn't require a new exam anyway. Just like any other condition, if they want more information they wait for it before signing off.

Did you keep a copy? Knightsbridge does not need an original; a photocopy will do. You will almost certainly need to provide the PCC or a photocopy to Knightsbridge. If you didn't keep a copy, you can order one for GBP 15 from what I remember.

Correction 6 GBP if it has been less than three months since you ordered the original. But a photocopy if you kept one will do just fine. Good luck
