England, Wales set for gay marriages in '14 after queen assents

(CNN) -- A bill to allow same-sex marriage in England and Wales is now law, though the unions aren't expected to take place until 2014.

Queen Elizabeth II has given her assent to the bill, which the British House of Commons passed on Tuesday, the house's speaker, John Bercow, said Wednesday.

The monarch's assent -- a formality in the United Kingdom -- makes the measure official. The first same-sex wedding could be held as early as next summer.

I know gay men that have been together like 20 years unmarried...I wonder if marriage will ruin some of these pairings like it does in hetero marriage?

I've seen the marriage break more than a few relationships.

Well, if this isn't proof positive that our forefathers were right to tell the English to go and perform a physically impossible act on themselves then I don't know what is. If they hadn't done that, gay marriage would be the law of the land around here come January. Oh, the horror.

I don't think there's any reason to believe the numbers will be all that different.

Relationships are relationships. Regardless of who the participants are. People change, life changes, sh*t happens. Same sex marriages will likely face all the same challenges and obstacles that heterosexual marriages have.
