I haven't seen the stats coming out of the Romney campaign. Maybe I have, I just don't remember. I'm talking about the 47% comment he made, which was true.

I don't consider SS to be government assistance. That's like saying Merril Lynch is giving me assistance when I retire because I'm cashing in my 401k.

I didn't either, which is what p1ssed me off about them using it so the numbers would look so big.

For the record, I don't think he has to pay income tax either.

If I rememeber correctly, Romney eventually took back his 47% comment because it was "completely wrong"

I dunno, it's been a long time since I thought about him. laughing.gif

I think what he took back was saying that those 47% would never vote for him. Not sure why he would take back a true statement about 47% of the people in the U.S. not paying federal income tax.

Yeah, these are separate things I'm talking about. I do remember the 47% comment. I'm talking about the graphs they used to show where nearly all the country was on some sort of government assistance.

Oh wow, I forgot about the "they'd never vote for me" part.

All those things above are true. I think the point that is trying to being made is that if you can't take of yourself and the children you already have, it's probably not a good idea to have more children that require taxpayer support. Kinda hard to stop people from getting it on I guess. Maybe Depo-Provera might be something. I don't know. I just think it's irresponsible to have a bunch of kids that you have no means to support and then turn around and ask the taxpayers to support your irresponsible behavior.

Ohh and by the way, unemployment is usually not considered government assistance since companies pay into a fund. It would be like saying social security is government assistance when it's not.

People need to have access to birth control. We need to encourage less offspring and not promote overpopulation anyway.

Ohh yeah, whether it be food stamps or whatever. Got ya. I mean Gary used to run around here and brag about he he's getting $40k plus a year in some form of govt. handout without having to do anything.

For sure. If we can spend tax money on birth control and save more tax money on govt assistance and health care, why not do it?

Well people and their employers pay something like a 15% FICA tax combined. There is no welfare tax that I'm aware of. If you're referring to Romney's quote about the 47%, I think he said that 47% of people don't pay Federal Income tax, which is true.

My comment was for the people who run out of Employment insurance. They really have no place to go at that point. It's not like they choose to be unemployed.

Sure they do. May be most of them didn't choose to be unemployed, but alot them chose to remain unemployed. I know someone personally that used to the entire 99 weeks and when that was up, it is was right around the time he was old enough to receive SS benefits.

I hear you. My ex girlfriend waited until her unemployment was all gone before actively looking for a real job. It was one reason we broke up; she wanted the same kind of job when none were out there.

But I've been on unemployment while going to school full time and that worked out for me. I also was given a grant by the JTPA (Job Training Partnership Act). It's the reason I got a tech degree.

I haven't been out of work since 1994, so should I be sterilized? I know you're not saying that but others have.

Some people work the system. I know that's true. I'd say I'm a product of what happens when it works. (My opinion at least.) ;)

I came back from Thailand with $20 in my pocket in 2007. I got a job working in a car wash for $7 an hour. I had a hell of a time convincing the guy to hire me since I was making $100k+ yearly prior to that. So it's frustrating to me when I see people pissing and moaning about how they cant work, or there's no jobs or whatever.

There's always jobs. Some people aren't willing to do work they think is "below" them though.

No sympathy for those people.

That was the argument. "You want me to flip burgers"? I would always say a person with a job always looks better than the person on unemployment for 18 months. She would get so angry.

My last stint on unemployment and school I was homeless the last month and slept in my car. It was at least summer in California and I had a convertible 66 Impala so I didn't consider it roughing it. lol

People who refuse to work I have no time for.

I'm gonna regret posting this, because Mr. BD will be along shortly with his thing about how great unions are.

When I worked at this car wash, you had to show up at 8 am, however they wouldn't put you on the clock until it got busy enough. So you might show up there at 8 and actually not start working/earning money until 10 or 10:30. It was B.S. if you ask me. I actually looked up the law in Texas, and apparently there's nothing illegal about it.
