I wrote on here a couple of months ago about my mother-in-law applying for a tourist visa to come and visit us and to meet our new son who will be born in September. I know that it is going to be hit or miss, but I wanted to see what people on here think about the documents she is taking, and if you think that any of them will be harmful. We have sent all of these documents, but we can still tell her to not take some of them.

1. Courtesy Letter from US Senator from Colorado, sent electronically, asking for a fair review.

2. Marriage certificate to her husband, who is staying in Mexico and works out of state.

3. Letter from her son who lives in the same town, with pictures of her with her granddaughter, and the letter states that they spend 2-3 days a week together and that they have a very close relationship.

4. Letter from other daughter who lives in Mexico, stating their relationship and that they see each other often.

5. Letter from landlord stating that she has lived there for 7 years, and a letter stating that she paid rent in advance for the time that she will be traveling and that she will be looking over her belongings while she is traveling, along with the receipt from the transaction.

6. Letter from the bishop of her Church, stating that she has an important calling in the church, which is a responsibility of leadership which is ongoing and which she will continue when she returns.

7. Pictures with her husband and her together, and of us when we went down to visit them on numerous occasions.

8. Verification of my wife's pregnancy from our doctor.

9. An invitation letter from us to her, stating the different attractions that we would be seeing while she is here.

10. A letter from me and one from my wife stating that we will be covering her travel expenses, and that I will go down to Mexico City to pick her up and to take her back.

11. Proof of my wife's legal permanent residency here in the United States.

I know our case is hard because she doesn't own land and she personally doesn't have a formal job, however, this is all we have, and we are hoping that she will get a good CO who can tell that she is sincere. I know that it may be a long shot, so comments about that aren't really necessary, unless they have constructive suggestions about the evidence that I have listed above.

Thanks in advance.

PS: Also, all of the letters are signed and accompanied by a copy of ID showing that the signatures are legitimate.

Well, certainly none of those things would be considered harmful to her visa application. Seems like a pretty decent list to me. The fact that your wife is legal should help out a bit with their first impression of your mother-in-law.

But, does she have the money to cover her own trip/expenses or not? Sometimes it sends up a red flag if they say someone else is covering it, as though they don't make enough money in their home country to afford the vacation.

Thanks for the reply. I will be covering at least the flight portions of her trip and she will be staying with us, so for the most part I will be covering her day-to-day expenses here as well. That is one of my main concerns, but she simply doesn't make enough money to pay for the trip. My father-in-law makes decent money for Mexico, and he will be helping to pay for her trips from her hometown to Mexico City for the interview and back, and for her expenses of traveling back to Mexico City for her flights to the US if approved. We are just hoping for a positive outcome. Thanks again!

If you ask my opinion neither of these are required.

Keep it simple answer things on DS-160 and take proof asset, like her and her husbands bank statement, their joint ownership of any property, their joint investment if any etc.

Thanks for your advice, she does have some paperwork from my father-in-law's employment, but he is currently out of the State and she hasn't been able to get much more from him because of time and distance restraints. We are hoping that her family ties, and the few financial ties that she is presenting will be enough to prove that she will be returning to Mexico and that she does not have any immigrant intent.

Perhaps just have her state that you agreed to pay her way as a gift as long as her husband payed for all commuting around Mexico, that way it looks more like the financial leg of the trip was set up between the two families and you're not paying for everything.

Today was my Mother-in-Law's interview. Her appointment was at 11:30 and they finally got to her at about 2:30. They asked a lot of questions about my father-in-law, and about me actually. At the end he approved the visa! However, he didn't ask for her passport. He just gave her a little piece of paper with the address for DHL and that it would be there in 4-6 days. She asked if they needed her passport and they said no, so that is what confuses me a little bit. Other people who had been approved were told the same and also did not have to leave their passport there.

Has anyone encountered something like this before? The important thing is that the visa was approved, but I just want to make sure there are no other problems now.

Thanks!
