Do you really have to leave for US before your 21st bday if you have been issued a visa for F2A visa category? Also, anyone knows the expiration of F2A visa from the date being issued? Thank You!

You do not have to enter the US before age 21. You can enter after turning 21 if you have your visa. Turing 21 before getting a visa is another issue.

The expiration date is on the immigrant visa. generally, an immigrant visa is good for six months after the medical exam .

Follow-up question:

Accdg. to this immigrant visa instruction that can be found here says:

If you plan to immigrate to the United States with your children, or to have your children join you in the United States later, you must prove that your children are:

  • Unmarried
  • Eligible to be listed under your visa classification, and
  • Under the age of 21 at the time they enter the United States

Does the highlighted instruction applies to me or only for derivatives? I am the principal applicant/beneficiary. The reason I ask because if ever I will get my visa I would like to finish my studies which is going to be 4 months after I turn 21.

Thank you very much

The Child Status Protection Act (CSPA) changes the above text.

Under CSPA, your age is frozen when your PD becomes current. Come Aug 1, your age will freeze in the F2a category. For immigration purposes, your age will freeze at 20.
