US 'to open Hyderabad consulate'

The United States will soon open another consulate in India, this time in Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, the state government says.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy made the announcement as US President George W Bush was visiting the city.

It will be the fourth US consulate in India, after Mumbai (Bombay), Calcutta and Madras (Chennai).

Mr Reddy said thousands of Indian IT staff would benefit.

At present, IT professionals in Hyderabad have to travel to Madras to get a US visa.

Note: it would really have been nice if this had happened LAST year (Guntur is about 2 hours rail journey closer to Hyderabad than Chennai). It may now reduce the backlog at Chennai somewhat (maybe 1 month).
