Medgar Evans Jury:

All white, both hung juries. He didn't see jail until 30 years later when the jury was mixed.

Emmitt Till Jury:

Both killers had all white juries, acquitted. Add insult to injury: Bryant and Milam were acquitted of Till's kidnapping and murder, but only months later, in a magazine interview, protected against double jeopardy, they admitted to killing him.

I can keep going.

It is better that ten guilty white men go free than one innocent black man goes to prison....oh, wait!

The loudest voices aren't always yelling the most rational things. Especially when those voices are on the outside looking in. Who knows what would have been different had they been inside that courtroom.

I doubt most people who are outraged even watched the trial on a day to day basis.

They probably knew only what the media told them and then the verdict.

Probably a very accurate statement. Black teenager is dead and white guy that killed him goes free. Alot of people probably don't know much more about it than that. I sure wish I didn't.

You think an all black jury would have gone against the instructions given and come to a different conclusion? Why?

Ask Bill. He claims that jury's don't have to follow instructions and that the jury is free to disregard the law, and vote on conscience alone.

SYG is a self defense law. And many states have some form of it.

In Florida, self defense claims TRIPLED in the years following the enactment of SYG.

Do you think that's a coincidence?

The primary difference between common-law self-defense and “Stand Your Ground” is the matter of retreat. While “Stand Your Ground” abolished the duty to retreat, common-law self-defense requires one–outside of the home or curtilage–to retreat if possible, and if doing so will avoid the need to use deadly force. (Falco v. State, 407 So. 2d 203)

So you think self defense claim number increased means ppl were committing murder and claiming SYG?

I think SYG sets a dangerous precedent. It makes it easier TO claim self defense.

Why are you so obsessed with the racial make up of a jury, rather than the facts of the case? You keep bringing up previous cases, conveniently omitting the ones you want to, to prove that black people have been wronged in the past. What does that have to do with the GZ trial, the trial that we are talking about.

Do you honestly think that an all black jury would have found GZ guilty based on the evidence? You yourself have agreed that the case wasn't proven beyond a reasonable doubt, so why are you now looking for the boogeyman? Why is the racial makeup of the jury a factor in a case where you have admitted that there wasn't enough evidence to convict in the first place?

Because it shows how the justice system thinks of blacks as a whole. I didn't leave anyting out, I know OJ did it and did it ever occur to you the reason he got acquitted was because the police station screwed up with the evidence and DNA was completely flubbed, or are you thinking because blacks were on the jury it was a racial thing? Personally I think he should have been thrown under the bus, but like you guys keep pointing out, it's the legal system.

I've pointed out several cases where all white juries have convicted innocent black men and let guilty white men go free, some more than once. And yet it escapes you why we are up in arms about this.

If the jury was mostly black, I'll take the hit on this one. They would have found him guilty. I know this for a fact because every single black person, young and old,(I'm talking about my mom's age 60+) has expressed their feelings about this. They see their kids in TM. They've lived through this, they know how they would have reacted. You can't convince a black person who's lived through this mess that a man who got out of his car to chase a teenager without identifying himself at all, who was walking home from the store, who had no clue as to why he was followed, would react any differently.

Here's what you should do. Find the nearest black person and ask them what they think. You can even quote me, and see what the response is.

"Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge." -Toni Morrison

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.

TM was profiled and assumed to be up to no good because he was black. If the jury was black, GZ was guilty because he was white. Isn't that how it's supposed to work? whistling.gif

I have errands to run after work. If I see a black person walking around, I'll get out of my car, follow them, and ask them their thoughts.
