Hi everyone, me and my went through a long process to get my wife's K1 Visa, she arrived in the United States a month ago and now we found out she is pregnant, and I do not have health insurance, we are sending our AOS package this week, we do not want to apply for Medicaid or anything that will affect her transition to get her green card, does anyone has any idea on how I can get affordable health insurance for her and the baby, how can I get health insurance for her without affecting her immigration status, I would appreciate it a lot, thank you for any help in advance! If it helps we live in the state of Pennsylvania!

Talk to your chosen doctor and hospital about self paying- we were in a similar situation and they gave us a 33% discount for paying for all routine care at the first appointment, making the total cost for prenatal care and birth about $10'000. Home birth is another option if you are comfortable with it, and will be significantly cheaper.

Well, I'm a former k1 visa holder. I came here a year and half ago with a k1 visa too. Once we got married, we decided to start looking for a health insurance for me. My hubby already had one through his job. We went for "health insurance shopping" and basically all of them tells you to wait a period of 6-9 month BEFORE getting pregnant if you want them to affort your maternity care. They see pregnancy as "a preexistent condition" so they don't cover it if you already pregnant. We didn't want to have babys yet (back then) so we ended up hiring Humana. This health insurance covers pregnancy after a waiting period of 6 month. Now Im 12 weeks pregnant. The thing is that you should go to your nearest hospital and try to deal an affordable plan, a lot of people in the US give birth without having a health insurance, they just make some sort of contract with the Hospital. Some places even let you start paying monthly payments way before the baby is born.

There are usually low cost self pay options for uninsured people. My husband doesn't get health insurance until October through his work so right now we have to self pay for pre-natal care. Some clinics will also do payments. The clinic I'm going to charges 1800 and lets us pay in 4 installments for prenatal care which does not include the actual birth, though closer to that time hubby will have insurance so I'm not too worried about that right now. Just google "sliding scale prenatal care" or something like that for your area, that is what I did.

I will add that it does seem daunting as my husband didn't know what we should do either and myself being from Canada and not used to having to pay for everything, it can be overwhelming. Congratulations and good luck!!
