George made a statement on TV. That opened the door just enough to impeach him, and it also went to the State's theory of the case. However, the defense was not stupid enough to claim Zimmerman didn't have a racist bone in his body, nor did they claim he didn't have any trouble with the law, so evidence regarding that could not be brought up at trial.

Unfortunately for the prosecution they called Dee Dee to testify. She painted a picture of Trayvon in his own words that the defense was not allowed to paint.
