Hello! I was wondering if I could get any suggestions on towns and or cities that have a similar feels to England. My husband is missing home and we are thinking of moving to a place that will feel a bit more like it. He wants to be able to walk to town and whatnot.

Please let me know!

Boston, Philadelphia, and then there's a coupla places in North and South Carolina.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

My husband met an expat from England at work. He's lived in Greenbelt (Old Greenbelt), Maryland for the last 30 years and says it's so much like England. The old part is extremely walkable with everything very central. We are moving there in a few weeks also smile.png Also Old Town Alexandria, Virginia is very walkable though much more expensive to live in.

Maybe a trip to Epcot at Disney, Orlando where there is a UK pavillon as part of World Showcase. A bit cheesy and pricey but may help plus all the workers are British and pub serves good shepheards pie apparently (havent tried)

It is not where I breathe but where I love that I live.

I would say Boston as well. Although not my favourite city in the US, Cambridge (just on the other side of the Charles River) is great, very walkable and very liveable in general. It's a great place to live and does remind me of London suburbs a little bit.

Anywhere in "New England" would probably work dancin5hr.gif

I can so understand how he feels, I'm a city girl living in the middle of nowhere now, no paths so I can go for a walk and the nearest store is 10 miles away.

Public transport seems non existent until you hit the larger cities in NC, Raleigh seems nice and has footpaths but it's still so different. Its lovely that you're considering a move to somewhere a little more accessible and familiar to your husband, has he had a trip back to the UK lately? A trip 'home' always helps!!!

According to the travel writer Bill Bryson who is American but lived a lot of his life in England, small college towns in New England are the most English.

Personally, I like Boston as it has city parks that remind me of England, is close to the coast and has good public transport. I also liked San Antonio, Texas as the centre had a nice cafe culture feel in the evenings. It depends on what he is used to in England though, I live in rather sleepy rural Devon so cities the size of Boston seem very different in comparison to what I'm used to but I'm sure if I'd lived in a big city in England big US cities would seem more normal to me. Maybe you could try to find a 'like for like' situation, so if he lived in London move to a big city, if he lived in a rural area move somewhere quieter?

I am also in this situation! I miss being able to walk places and also the lack of places to just get out into the country is awful as there are not many public paths or nature reserves like there are all over the UK - at least where I am in Maryland. Saying that, downtown Annapolis, the capitol of Maryland has a great feel if you actually live downtown - everything is walkable, but if you like outdoor living there is not much apart from boating as its very flat unless you go further inland. If you like boating then its a great place! But its a very historic city (by US) standards and reminds me of Dartmouth or other port cities in the UK. Its more like a big town, but has a nice feel to it and like I said you can walk to all the shops and restaurant if you actually live downtown. Aonther plus is proximity to bigger cities, like DC and Baltimore (1/2 hour) and NY (4 hours) etc.
