Hi everyone! Another same-sex couple here getting ready to file our AOS paperwork. My husband and I have been together for almost 14 years and it feels amazing to finally start this process (that should have been available to us many years ago). Scary but exciting. Looking forward to talking with everyone smile.png

Congratulations! Another 14-year'er here as well :-)

Have you and your husband been watching the news from Australia? I am SOOO hoping that Australia finally gets its act together so that my spouse and I can be recognized in BOTH of our countries! If the ACT passes Marriage Equality, will Abbott be able to negate it? Hope not! No matter what they say in Oz, being a "de facto" couple is NOT the same!

I think the hope for marriage equality in Australia died when Abbott was elected. The fact he has come out against the ACT proposal is a good indicator of this. I agree about the "de facto" vs. marriage differences. Still Australia is more advanced on the social justice side than many countries. Marriage recognition would be great, but it will not be quick.

I agree about the "de facto" vs. marriage differences. Still Australia is more advanced on the social justice side than many countries. Marriage recognition would be great, but it will not be quick.

When overseas friends ask me about marriage equality in Australia, and I explain it all, they always ask "what is a 'de facto'?". Australia still has a long way to go... Partners still have to go through courts to get their partners inheritance, parenting/adoption/surrogacy/IVF laws are an absolute dogs breakfast (varies widely from state to state), and don't even get me started on immigration for LGBT couples! It still makes me so mad that straight couples in Australia can just sponsor their fiancés immediately, yet same-sex couples have the 12-month cohabitation rule... yet there's no visa for it!!! I'm still bitter about it, and I know binational couples (where one of them was an Australian citizen) that have had to relocate to a third country to meet the one year rule.

Funny now that DOMA has fallen, Australia has fallen miles behind. Living in California now, I cannot think of one area of law that treats our marriage differently to a straight marriage. I honestly feel completely equal now.

I wish Australia would hurry up and get with the times, but can't see in happening in the next 3 years!!
