Passport with visa damaged

I'm Australian, in the US on an IR1 visa, don't yet have my Green Card - I've got a stamp in my passport that I got at the border that they said would do as the Green Card until I actually got the Green Card.

My Australian passport has been damaged - I have to communicate with the Australian Embassy to find out if it's sufficiently damaged that I need a new one, but if I do, how do I get the IR1 visa and Green Card stamp put into the new passport?

Thanks in advance for any help.

When my husbands italian passport was damaged he had a c1/d and he attached the new passport to the old passport (with the visa) and used both when traveling. Not sure if it would be the same type procedure but I would suggest an infopass appt at the uscis office and see what their procedures are ( to get an I-551 stamp or new visa). I would think however that there is a procedure for such cases...

If you obtain a new passport but still have yet to receive your green card when you new passport is in hand, make an INFOPASS appointment at a local USCIS office to have an I-551 stamp placed in your new passport.

Thank you very much. Will they also be able to put the visa itself in the new passport?

No, but you wouldn't need it; an I-551 stamp placed in a passport by USCIS will also act as a temporary green card until you receive the permanent one.
