I'm not sure which part of the forum to ask this question, but since we're going through the K1 process I'll ask it here. My fiance is from the Netherlands and doesn't have a driver's license. He always used public transportation so he didn't have a need for a car. We just started researching what he'll need to do to get his license here and on the Ohio BMV website it says:

"Take documentation to provide evidence of your full legal name, date of birth, and social security number (if one has ever been assigned), proof of legal presence (U.S. Birth Certificate, valid U.S. Passport/Passport Card, Naturalization Papers, USCIS documents), and proof of residency."

Does that mean that we have wait till AOS is complete for him to apply for a driver's license or can we do it after we're married?

Yes, even before she can get a driver's license as long as she already apply for her Social Security Number. she can apply the same day she gets to the US

It's very state-specific. In California, I will have to wait for the EAD.

Agree with that. OP, ask your local DMV what documents they want to see.

Even though the Oklahoma DMV website stated that I could apply for a Learner Permit with my unexpired I-94, my local DMV office would not let me apply, I had to wait for my EAD. Which is in fact another reason to apply for AOS/EAD as soon as you can after getting married.

Good luck to you!

Probably after the GC is received but he should be able to get his learners permit.

Yes...agreed with the other posts. Go to the office that he will be applying at and get the information in person because sometimes the website is wrong(shocking, I know) and your local DMV workers will have first hand knowledge.

Thank you, everyone, for all your responses. I really appreciate it. I guess I'll have to call the DMV to get clarification.

California specific question: My fiance doesn't really have much driving experience, nor does she have a license from her home country in the Philippines. Would she need to take the written test, get a learner's permit, and take the driving test to get her license? How do they determine that?

It's been 25 years since I last had anything to do with this sort of thing lol (for myself).

In SC I was able to get my license as soon as I had my SSN. I waited until after the wedding because I took my husbands last name.

The only struggle we had was the proof of residency... It stated on the list the lady gave me the first time I went to bring mail that's send to me at the SC address or a bank statement with my name and address.

Well I took the bank statement, since my husband and I have a shared account they didn't accept that. Took a letter that was mailed to me from Germany, didn't accept that. Finally my bank just wrote a signed note saying I use their services and I live at so so address.

So make sure to ask what exactly they want!

As it depends on the state may I know what state you live in?

NVM

It appears Ohio requires SS number + additional residency documents (implies at a minimum EAD). Since they appear to be the ONLY state that does not specifically list it out it is going to require a call directly to the DMV or worse a visit

i don't get it.
