Why? Some people are either done with their immigration journeys, or don't feel like posting a timeline since they only participate in the non-immigration sections of the forums.

What do you care?

From the past day there have been quite a few that I was drawn in by the title, wanting to learn more, only to find it had a link and nothing else.

It's one member that does that. Check it out. All these threads were started by the same individual. Plus, the thread titles usually have zip to do with the articles that he links to.

well I care because the estimated timelines are for the benefit of all members, yet some members come on .. totally out of line and blast others.. why even join if that's the case ?

Ah. Him.

I've stopped expecting him to actually read the content he's posting.

Yeah, I wouldn't suggest full articles either, for both the copyright issue and because many readers equally don't want to sit and read entire articles just to involve themselves in a discussion about it. A concise paragraph or two would serve a better purpose.

I'm not saying that there are readers who willingly click on everything under the sun and that there are not readers who willingly read every word of huge bodies of text, because yes there are. But, again, the whole point of my suggestion here is to help facilitate more widespread and relevant reader interest and interaction, which is the point of foruming.

I disagree with the first paragraph. I prefer the option to read the entire thing. I don't like it when people carve up a source and post whatever supports their agenda. Granted there's so many articles that support extremist positions in their entirety, so it may be a moot point.

The vibe of P&R here is usually for the far right or left to find supporting arguments of their preconceived notions, post them on VJ and pat themselves on the back. The extremists rarely comment on the article but the context "SEE!" is clear.

Of course AJ and Bill prob post the most and I personally feel they both (for the most part) post creditable stories from credible sources.

You don't know why people are here. Maybe they already finished their immigration journey and made a new account to talk to the people they've met. They aren't participating in the immigration discussion anymore. They're participating in the off topic stuff. They don't need to link their timeline to do that.

I do see your point made, as it would help objectify the content. My suggestion to that then would be to still post the link, so that readers who want to read the whole thing still can, but to limit the post to a few sentences or paragraphs summarizing it to capture more readers' interest. You might be willing to sit through an entire article before responding, and I give you kudos for that, but many are not.

It's how I would do it anyways.

Timelines are important if one is wanting to get advice and we need to see their timeline to narrow down that advice to specifics on their case. But otherwise, yeah, I think it really is just up to that person whether or not he/she wants to share.

I agree with the original post in that it would be nice for all the posted topics to contain some type of text from the op with the link.

But I also +1 these two posts, so nothing I say should be taken seriously.laughing.gif

No.

Request denied.

Next time you're feeling butthurt, try some Aveeno instead of starting a thread to tell us about it.

If they're posting both the link and a snippet, that's great, because then if you want to read the whole story, you can just click the link.

Personally, a snippet would be great so that a) I know what the article is about and b) I know why the person posted it.

I haven't been in P&R too long, but so far, it seems to me that the only threads that actually get any sort of discussion are the extreme ones. The centrist or neutral ones may get lots of views, but few comments.
