Man it is so hard to hold onto that title! First we lose it to Australia but luckily the UN changed how they formulate "obese" and that gave the US back the title.. Now we have lost it once again to Mexico. BTW: congrats to Australia who seems to have lost a lot of weight and are exactly equal to my states average so I know how good you must be looking good.gif

I dare you to try to find the original source of this article.. The original article I read was from the NY Post who had one source.. Fox News.. Who sourced Medical Daily who sourced the story from CBS News which finally had a link to the original FAO report that contained the tables - that by the way show as five years out of date - looks like they just forgot to change the year for the adult obesity field in the table i dunno...

So yeah Mexico is #1 (32.8% of population obese), the US slides to #2 (31.8% of population obese)), We have a couple of big trenders that may help us get to #4... Venezuela and Argentina but we will have to see.

The following countries show as having higher obesity rates than Mexico or the US but for some reason they don't get a ranking.. I thought originally it was because the tables shows adults and maybe the ranking also adds in non-adults.. but the numbers from the articles exactly match the tables so I don't know why these fatter-than-mexico-and-US countries are not ranked:

Egypt

South Africa

Kuwait

Qatar

Saudi Arabia

Syrian Arab Republic

United Arab Emirates

Bahamas

Barbados

Saint Kitt

Belize

Cook Islands

... Many many other smaller Islands.

The actual report and tables can be found here (tables begin on page 75):

Original Article:

Mexico beats US to be world's fattest country - but we're still a close second

The United States no longer holds the title of the world’s most populous, obese nation; that designation has been passed on to Mexico.

According to a new report from the United Nations, nearly 70 percent of Mexican adults are overweight, and childhood obesity in the country has tripled within the past decade, Medical Daily reported. One-third of Mexican teenagers are also obese, and experts believe that four out of every five obese children will remain overweight for the rest of their lives.

Overall, 32.8 percent of Mexican adults are considered obese, compared to 31.8 percent of adults in the United States. Nearly 70,000 deaths in Mexico each year are caused by weight-related diabetes, and more than 400,000 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed annually.

Experts believe the rise in Mexico’s obesity rates has to do with the continuously growing gap between the country’s classes, as 50 percent of the population currently lives below the poverty line. According to Medical Daily, healthy diets are becoming less affordable, prompting individuals with low incomes to consume more unhealthy foods, such as fried foods and soda.

One researcher also believes the increase can be attributed to more Mexicans moving from rural to urban areas, where food prices are much higher and sedentary lifestyles are easier.

EDIT: Ah.. rankings are probably for overweight, but the article is showing figures for obese.. Christ.. still can't find those tables...

If an airline is charging me by the pound then they should be required to give me more space based on my weight.
