Hello,

Here is my situation. Any advice on the best way to go about getting a visa would be fantastic.

I am an American, teaching English in Korea. My contract is up in June 2014.

I am newly married. My wife is a citizen of Vietnam. she will come live with me in Korea until June 2014.

At that time we will both go to live in Ho Chi Mihn City in Vietnam. for at least a year (June 2015).

My question is, since we will not be returning to the states until at least June/July 2015;

1.do we start the visa process right away?

2. should we start in Korea or wait until we go to Vietnam? Is one place easier than the other?

3. We will have been married for 2 years before going back to America, will that matter?

4. Employment. I may not have a job lined up in America for when we plan to go back, complicate matters?

5. We will likely have a child by the time we return to the states (born in Vietnam). Easy to register their birth and get citizenship for the child?

I'm probably not asking all the right questions, so any advice or insight will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

.....And the process begins....maybe...

no don't start now

if you live and file from abroad you will complete uscis in about three months, the nvc will take a total of around two months, interview a month after that.. plan on 6-7 months from the time you send it until approval

if you start it earlier .. you can delay the petition at nvc and at the embassy too (as long as you stay in touch with them)

being married over two years is a big plus.. gets a ten year green card with no removal of conditions

if you do not have a job transferrable to the US, you will need assets or a cosponsor to qualify. if you can not get either, plan on moving earlier and getting to work.. a min of four months would be ideal

you should absolutely get citizenship for the kid!... you will have to do it at the us embassy of the country you are in.. I have read some cases where they will ask for a dna confirmation

good luck!
