I was out of town over the weekend but my "plan" was similar to Gary's. Be armed just like usual. I did, however, pull my normal "trunk guns" (Draco AK-47 pistol and Para P-14 .45) out and give them a good once over including fresh lube. Nothing like watching Al Sharpton while cleaning guns!

I also had alternate routes of travel (avoiding major metro and urban areas) scoped out just in case I needed to divert. My go-bag was ready too, just in case we had to unass the Jeep and hoof it the rest of the way.

Probably the most extraordinary part of this ordeal was relating to my passenger that she'd be on the AK if stuff jumped off. Talk about a wakeup call for modern Americans. "If people mean to do us harm, your job will be to terminate them with this AK-47." Oh if I could have had a picture of her face. It took some convincing, but she understood the importance of getting mobile and clearing out of an unfriendly area.

If the government is going to force me to exercise my "right" to health care, then they better start requiring people to exercise their Right to Bear Arms. - "Where's my public option rifle?"

I am quite comfortable knowing that if I am victimized, it won't be without quite a bit of doing on their part.

I don't envy your way of thinking. It sounds exhausting and paranoid.

"If people mean to do us harm, your job will be to terminate them with this AK-47."

Jesus Christ. Do you live in a movie?

I live in reality. There are evil people in this world who could try to harm me. I'm comforted by the fact that I won't be placed in a situation where I need to hide and pray nothing bad happens while I wait on someone to come save me.

I have the option of defending myself. You should try it sometime. Personal responsibility is exteremely comforting.

I absolutely understand carrying a gun to defend yourself. It's not something I would do, but I get it.

What I don't get is the constant paranoia that someone is out to get you. I've never thought that way. Never in my life have I been in a situation where I thought "oh god, why didn't I bring an AK-47 to this?!"

Why is TM out late in the first place if he stay at home none of this would have gone down in the hood.

Thank you,

Isn't that from Harry Potter?

I don't think anyone is out to get me but there are people who routinely victimize others and if they happen to choose me, I'll have the capability to rapidly and (hopefully) quite effectively counter that threat. I'm baffled by people who say, "It'll never happen to me." I hope it never happens to me too but I'm not going to forego precautionary measures. I have a fire extinguisher in my kitchen. Does that make me paranoid of fires?

I don't know about Harry Potter but I do know the first person you're likely to call when you're in trouble is a man with a gun. Logic dictates any reasoning to need a man with a gun would mean the situation is such that you'd want it over as quickly as possible. As such, I've determined I can "cut out the middle man" and simply defend myself. I don't need to call 9-1-1 before I counter a threat. I can counter it immediately - then - call 9-1-1.

Average response time is 7 minutes. Have you ever truly considered how long that is?

I didn't say it would never happen to me. I just don't live my life as if there's a threat around every corner. I don't walk around "on alert". Maybe that's naive, but it's far more enjoyable.

I don't think any regular citizen needs to be carrying around an AK-47 for defense.
