This is a very important question that I just came across and need to get answered. I was looking into how to demonstrate combined financial resources between me and my wife. My wife works full time at a hospital as a doctor in Pakistan so she has her own salary and doesn't need anything from me. Whenever I visited Pakistan its been 3 times since our marriage, I just took cash with me because that is cheaper than doing money transfer from the US. So I've given her about 5-6 thousand dollars over the time from my student loan personal expense money which she deposited in her own account and used it for our spending when I was there. Issue is this, she never put that money in our joint account, she just kept it in her own account. Before we had opened up a joint account there I had money transferred about 1000 dollars to her personal account as well which was converted into Rupees when it got there.

In addition we don't have any combined ownership of any property because I don't own any, and in the US you can't open up a joint account until your spouse is there with you in person and has social security number and all that.

So the question is this - now when she goes for the interview they will say you don't have anything in that account or you never used it. So should she put all her money into that account now and close her existing accounts? Or should she just keep it as is and just tell them the truth that we never bothered to use that account because we never really needed to. I am just concerned that if she transfers all the money now they might question as to why she did that right before the interview. I do have her listed as a beneficiary on my whole life insurance policy here which is about 600K + in value and has a cash value of about 25K.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated?

why do you think the interviewer or embassy cares about the money in Pakistan?

They will only be looking at the available assets and affidavit of support you will complete and provide.

We had joint accounts - kept minimal money in there, but any money i sent or brought over and had exchanged was put into her own account.

No problems at the interview - not even asked about money etc.

for what its worth, i made my wife a beneficiary on my US Accounts - they dont need her to be there for that and they wont ask for her SSN either. Worked with Chase bank...
