If you read the instructions on the I-129f, it says what forms of proof of citizenship are acceptable.

Also what does birth certificate number mean? I called vital records and they said there is no number it is just the city I was born in.

I believe that certificate number refers to the naturalization certificate number, only needed if that is how you derived your US citizenship.

A photocopy is fine

If you use a passport then what would you send?

We also included copies of his personal data page, his stamps into Ireland and his Irish work permit.

Some people copy every page of the passport, I'm noy sure if this is in lieu of a birth cert copy.

What's required of the USC is proof of citizenship, not necessarily a birth certificate. A birth certificate is one of the possible ways of providing proof of citizenship.

For all documents submitted in support of a petition, the USCIS normally only requires photocopies. So a photocopy of your birth certificate, a photocopy of your passport, or a photocopy of whatever other document you use to provide proof of citizenship will work.

You can never get your ORIGINAL birth certificate -- it's maintained by a government authority (usually a county clerk/county recorder) in a secure vault. The closest you can normally get is a certified copy, which means a copy issued by the government authority that maintains the original in its vault. A certified copy will have some sort of raised seal indicating that it's a true and accurate copy issued by the government authority that maintains the original.

If you submit a photocopy of a certified copy of your birth certificate with your I-129F, then at the interview, they might request to see the certified copy from which you made the photocopy, so they can verify the raised seal.

Hey yeah I was wondering about that number too. I noticed a small digit number on my birth certificate too and wondered if that is what they were looking for. The form isn't exactly clear in stating whether the number is for birth cert. or naturalization...altho maybe both have numbers. I am filling out my I-129f at the moment and think that I will put the number on my birth cert. in that box. Sound good?

Photocopies are acceptable but you should be able to present an original should it be requested. I went ahead and sent an original (it isn't actually original, what they mean by original is a notarized copy provided by health dept or whatever, the original should be locked in a vault somewhere) becausae it only cost about $12 and I wanted to be safe. Sometimes people get RFE's for birth certs because they wanted a copy of front and back (most of them don't have backs, so if I were you I would just photocopy the blank back and label it as back of BC) :P

Copies of forms go with the I-129F petition. The originals (or certified copies to avoid another heated debate) are needed for the interview. I suggest also taking along copies to the interview as well. They can see the original (certified copy) and keep the copy if they want it.

If you look at other petition forms, exactly the same question is asked only it is set out differently and makes it much clearer. The number they are requesting there is the naturalization certificate number.
