I can't agree that feminism 'forced' women into the industrial workforce, many changes brought this about.

The idea that society 'looks down' on the stay at home mom is a different thing entirely. Quite honestly, I don't think it should be something to be 'looked down on' and I am not sure who does it, feminists? I don't know, but certainly the people I know don't see it as something 'wrong' or 'second class'

Equally, sometimes people can make a choice about it, and sometimes they can't. Neither way is right or wrong in my opinion. I have to say though, that many mothers do feel particularly bonded to their children when they are very young and if they are unable to take extended maternatity leave for fear their career may end up down the pan that is certainly wrong in my book.

Whatever -- whether or not Europeans are "lazy" doesn't change the fact that working longer hours doesn't make a nation more productive or give it a higher standard of living, as is the case with several European countries

You are correct!!

No that was a misunderstanding pefroh, I meant people (and I know some of those, believe me, had several discussions) who say: I hate kids and don't want them. And I will never help people who have them, their own problem, they got themselves into this mess. I meant those kind of people.

Like me.

You reproduce, you take care of them. "They're the future of our country!" Then I feel really bloody sorry for our country.

See that homeless guy on the park bench? He was once "the future of our country". See that meth addict with the bleeding sores all over her body from her trying to 'get the bugs out'? She was once "the future of our country."

This country has raised kids up on a mile-high pedestal as some kind of supreme aspiration in life. If you don't like/have kids, you are looked down upon as some kind of monster. Sorry....I'm just tired of it.

And the poster who assumed that we would all end up having kids someday.....get over yourself. Anyone can pump out more and more good little consumers. It takes more control to NOT contribute to global overpopulation.

(This is a sensitive topic with me, as you can tell.)

women with spawn

Spawn?

Broodlings.

rugrats

I didn't use my favourite one....

#### trophies.

platy... i agree with you a lot of the time... but here is one that i must disagree, at least somewhat... this is a sensitive topic for me as well

why do you think there are all those messed up folks? think their parents didnt want to be there for them and help guide them to make the right decisions? most of them probably did, but couldnt afford to spend the time at home with those kids... when you are 85 and in an assited living facility, who is gonna take care of you? one of our spawn more than likely... everyones kids are not angels, but someone has to try

now in regards to responsibility... i agree with you in that ppl shouldnt have children until they can take care of them... i waited a long time, even tho i wanted a child badly... i waited because i wanted to finish college and be able to take care of my child... i didnt ever want to be someone who would not be able to put food on the table or a roof over their head... it pi$$es me off to no end at work to see the girls who have kids who dont want them, dont bother to care for them and cant quit doing drugs or alcohol at least while they are pregnant in order to give their own children a shot at a normal life... or those that just have more kids because it is yet another check from welfare each month (many of those women dont even try to work and have perfectly {and usually gaudy} manicured artificial nails and they cant be bothered to miss their weekly hair appt)... dont be so irresponsible about reproducing... it only creates problems for lots of ppl

i am currently pregnant with my second child... i work as a nurse and do 12 hr shifts... i know what its like to not be able to do things during the normal business hours... yet, i must find a way... mother or not... with this child i have had a lot of morning sickness, which i didnt have with my first... do you think that its caused me to miss one single shift? hell no... because i wont let it hold me back... i wont be a burden on someone else... and i will be returning to work as soon as my maternity leave is over, no matter how much i might wish i could stay home with my newborn baby... HOWEVER... have i ever missed work because of my child being sick or needing something? yes... is it often? no... and you know what? ive covered folks that needed to be off with their sick and dying parents... ive covered folks that needed to be off because of personal emergencies (spousal relationship problems)... ive covered for folks that wanted to go to a certain concert and they were scheduled for that day... ive covered for folks that needed time off to take care of the business of buying a home... ive covered for single ppl who needed to take their cat or dog to the vet... so do i feel guilty if i have a day or maybe 2 that i need to arrange to be off or take emergency time off in a year? nope... i sure dont... if my single coworker gets the flu, and calls out sick... i will go in and work if its at all possible for me to get there... i still have to work holidays (thanksgiving, christmas, etc)... i dont have all my weekends off... but thats just life... i accept it... and other folks have lives... they may not include children, but they do include sickness, death, other family emergencies, car problems, etc...

noone should hide behind their children, but they shouldnt be punished because they have them either... its just that simple

if all the responsible folks stop having kids, what will be left?

A true feminist believes women have the right to work in an office or raising children at home or both. Feminism is about giving women the same opportunities as men, but it's not about disregarding the fact that women are different than men. (Yes, I know some feminists used to say that women were the same as men, but science has proved otherwise (as has a perfunctory look downstairs) and I don't know many feminists who think that way now.) FMLA is completely inadequate, IMO. Most feminists I know want women to have *more* time off work to be moms at first.

People should not be punished for having children.

But on the other hand, people who don't have them shouldn't be punished either. I have pulled extra shifts many times for working moms. Most of them, I don't mind covering for occasionally. One of them completely took advantage (seriously, your kid goes to the dentist every Friday and you never know about it until lunch time on Friday?). But there are other ways of taking advantage, and I'll bet those same people would find a different way to skip work if they didn't have kids.

Hmmmm this gives me an idea... maybe I should start a business of schlepping people's kids to their doctor's appointments while they're at work...
