Well, people DO work 2nd shift and 3rd shift. I tend to go shopping at 3am on Fridays because that's my normal time to be awake, and Friday is my day off....

Friday 2 or 3am, buy ice cream, beer, and movies.. ftw!

There is certainly a need for care workers (and a few other basic services of course) to be working through the night, everything else is just generated by the way we accept that business rules our every move. Is any of it necessary? I am sure I will hear many arguments why it is that are based on money, but not very many based on anything else.

Quality of life is surely still important, no? I am struggling to come to grips with the notion that quantity is so much more important in every aspect of life...

We're altogether on an odd track in this thread :)

What strikes me as odd is that shopping is viewed as a recreation. There is very little 'need' to have shops open 24/7 and I can't imagine that many shops do very brisk business between 12am and 6 am. However, having never seen the need to go at that time of night I have no first hand knowledge:)

Mawilson, you are not suggesting that you might exceed the speed limit when the streets are empty are you???

I'm a little behind but I can speak to this. I live in a little town where 2 of the 3 chain grocery stores are 24 hour. When I questioned hubby on this he reminded me we live in a mill town at a port. They work all sorts of shifts, so for our little city it makes sense to have the ability to get food on your way home from work...even if that's at 5 am.

edit: I see this was addressed. Go me for not reading through for the first time.

The picture you posted in GP. Maybe it was just the light but it looked like a scratch.

You should come to LA, your fancy sports car would only likely hit 45 mph on the 405. Of course, you could always go out to the desert and put the pedal to the floor, but it would probably take 4 hours just to get East of San Bernardino :D

There's more to life than being a consumer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What? :o

Do you remember the show, Fantasy Island? I can imagine you going there asking Mr. Rourke for the fantasy of turning everything you touch to gold. :P

That would be the end of masturbation :(

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Same story here. Except there's no desert to floor it.

when we went to Death Valley we met some South African guys who decided to test the speedworthiness of their Porsche and took a photo of the dash to prove it -- 163 mph. oh my stars!
