What is process for reversing immigration, bringing US Citizen to Canada

I believe this belongs in the Canadian forums so if it is moved that would be good.

I have lived in the US for exactly one year today. I will make no comment on my experiences except to ask my fellow members how I would go about reversing the process and instead moving me and my US husband to Canada. I'm worried it would all be too onerous, however, I would like to know exactly what would be involved so that we can make an informed decision. Thanks for any input you may be willing to offer.

September 2, 2011: AOS invoice received, OPTIN email for EP sent
September 7, 2011: Paid AOS bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 9, 2011)
September 8, 2011: OPTIN email accepted, GZO number assigned
September 10, 2011: Emailed AOS package
September 12, 2011: IV bill invoiced
September 13, 2011: Paid IV bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 14, 2011)
September 14, 2011: Emailed IV package
October 3, 2011: Emailed checklist response (checklist generated due to typo on Form DS-230)
October 6, 2011: Case complete at NVC
November 10, 2011: Interview - APPROVED!!!
December 7, 2011: POE - Sea-Tac Airport

September 17, 2013: Mailed I-751 to CSC

September 23, 2013: Received NOA1 in mail (receipt date September 19th)

October 16, 2013: Biometrics Appointment

January 28, 2014: Production of new Green Card ordered

February 3, 2014: New Green Card received; done with USCIS until fall of 2023*

December 18, 2023:  Filed I-90 to renew Green Card

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

There was recently someone else who wanted to do the same thing. I suggest doing a few things before moving (which you can just do btw, you don't have to do the entire process outside of Canada, living apart like you did to get to the USA) like obtaining the USC FBI check.

Hmhm Niki is right. You can either file for permanent residency with your hubby staying in the states, but you also have the right to file while both of you live in canada! No need for separation time :D Which is pretty awesome.

He just won't be able to work while waiting for his visa, unless you file for a work visa too.

My ex-husband came to Canada, it took exactly one year from the time we sent the papers till we received an answer. The proccess is pretty simple too. You file everything in one shot, mail it and wait and wait and wait. Then you have the interview. And that's it.

It ended up costing... a lot. I don't remember the numbers right now, maybe around 1k. You paid part of it with the initial papers, and then the rest at the interview.

When you file initially, you have to send a police certificate for your husband. It had to be done through fingerprints and the FBI. It took several months to receive the certificate, so I would suggest doing it as soon as you can, so you won't be delayed.

You can file outland or inland, which means you can be in Canada with your hubby. He won't be able to work but at least you won't be separated.

26 January 2005 - Entered US as visitor from Canada.
16 May 2005 - Assembled health package, W2s.
27 June 2005 - Sent package off to Chicago lockbox.
28 June 2005 - Package received at Chicago lockbox.
11 July 2005 - RFE: cheques inappropriately placed.
18 July 2005 - NOA 1: I-485, I-131, I-765 received!
19 July 2005 - NOA 1: I-130 received!
24 August 2005 - Biometrics appointment (Naperville, IL).
25 August 2005 - AOS touched.
29 August 2005 - AP, EAD, I-485 touched.
15 September 2005 - AP and EAD approved!
03 February 2006 - SSN arrives (150 days later)
27 February 2006 - NOA 2: Interview for 27 April!!
27 April 2006 - AOS Interview, approved after 10 minutes!
19 May 2006 - 2 year conditional green card.
01 May 2008 - 10 year green card arrives.

15 May 2013 - Naturalization Interview, approved after 15 minutes.

10 June 2013 - Naturalized.
