Hey everyone havent posted in a while hope all is well. Well we got married 20 nov. Got the SSN in proccess went to the DMV today to get License or State ID. DMV says they can only give me an ID card for my wife that is valid for the time she is permitted to stay. Which is on that white entry card , forget the form number. I tryed searching here to get some advice and the best of my knowledge is that after we file for AOS we will get NOA1, is that all i need to bring to DMV so she can get some sort of ID? Plus usually paperwork i understand, but tired of having her carry her pp around everywhere.

thanks in advance

Jum has been in this situation too, took a lot of calls to different offices and the state DMV HQ. They kept getting back to "We need official card showing immigration status," no amount of any AOS NOAs, letters, calls, face to face meetings would make the NC DMV move. When she received her greencard, the world opened up, she took her test and got her license just fine. It was a stressful and annoying time trying to work through this issue.

I live in MA too and waas wondering about the id question. I read that they just exchange your drivers license. Im german and it say that german licenses are valid for 1 year after entry and that they will exchange it with some evidence, like a letter from the german DMV stating that I didnt have any major accidents or speeding tickets and stuff.

Is anybody else from Germany and know exactly hoe that works in MA, I tried to call the people but nobody picks up. the one person that picked up couldnt help me :(

I have the EAD but lost my Social security card and have trouble getting a new one (apparantly my EAD is not in the SAVE system). Also at the DMV without an original card they will not allow me to take the tests for the license.

I have the letter from the German DMV (in ENGLISH), and North Carolina doesn't care. Gotta take all the tests again!!! I really wonder why, since I am afraid of the people here not being able to drive!!! None of them knows what a blinker is or that there is actually a speed limit. ;) I've got a heart attack each time I drive! I still can drive since Geico acknowledged my license, therefor I am insured :) I jsut want the DL to have an American ID and people in stores when I buy a bottle of wine finally understand my birthdate (Europe form: day-month-year, confuses a lot of folks). ;)

@CJ & Jum: At which DMV office were you lucky? THey treated me pretty rude, even though I had an EAD, a paystub with my SSN, Duke bills, everything they ask for.... (I was in the Arrowood office)

@ Susanne: I'm not sure if you already have the certificate, but they send it to the US anyway. www.kba.de

Avoid the Arrowood office at all costs ("Tex," a lady runs the show there) I called the DMV in Raleigh and was referred to her (Jum also got to have her for her first test), she was the rudest person that I have ever encountered in my whole life. We tried 4 times at that office to get information/take the test to no avail. Even before the I-94 expired, Jum was able to attempt to take the test but because "Tex" had a strong southern drawl it was very difficult to understand what she was saying and Jum was not able to get past the pre-inspection even asking her to repeat the question.

We went to the Independence Blvd. location and were turned away one time without the green card or EAD in hand, they were polite and suggested that Jum wait for her EAD or greencard and they would gladly help her out.

Take a little adventure out to the Independence Blvd. location at:

6407 Idlewild Road, 28227

(704) 531-5563

Monday - Friday

It's off Exit #52 on I-485 East

Don't go on Friday, go in the middle of the week, early or afternoon and the wait is not too bad. The 3 DMV examiners that I saw appeared nice and helpful. If you have an EAD or greencard with an SS card that will suffice. Power bills, bank statements, and all that don't do good for people with immigration status.

Good luck!

Thanks CJ! And I thought it was just me - but that DMV is definetely hell!!! I called them and they said I wouldn't need a SSN card, a paystub with my SSN on it would be sufficient. Well, a trip and wait a I could have spared myself - waiting to be yelled at and ueber-boss (possibly Tex) explained rudely to me NO WAY. ;)

I'll try the Idlewild location, isn't too far from the social security office anyway (gonna stop by tomorrow, 4 weeks are over, supposedly the time they need to clear my EAD, but no SSN card yet). ;)

@ Susanne: Try again! I was amazed how quickly it worked. I will look up my stuff and PM you the email address and phone number of the lady who did the certificate for me (it came with a Anschreiben).

Thanks & lg Anna
