So husband went to apply for ss# today and in the system the lady said they listed his first name wrong, basically they added his middle name to his first name and that is how it appears also on his visa but all documents i have usually have my first middle last name i just cant believe someone out there in Jamaica or wherever they are putting this information in the system made such a mistake. So she said go to Department of Homeland Security to tell them to change his name in the system or everything will get messed up if she submits it with his first and middle name as his first name. This is ridiculous. So now we have appointment at DHS to see if they can change his name. Also should mention on the I-94 form addmision reccord they have his first and last name correct way. Who messed up and where, has anyone had that happen and how did you get it fixed?

na, the fix , the real fix,

can be had at any office of Customs and Border patrol. there are secondary inspection offices, deferred inspection offices, and even customer-facing offices at any port of entry around the airports.

Don't need an appointment, don't need to call ahead - just find the office closest to you and GO.

Once there, ask for the shift supervisor, and ask the shift supervisor to 'fix the name' to match what's in the visa.

Once done, wait a week, as the SAVE database updates are done in batch mode and the SSA office will see the update after that week.

Go Get Em, and Good Luck !

(why is the name munged, you ask? the data entry clerk working at the POE got lazy )

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

They have done the same thing to me ( POA was Atlanta) Ive made an appointment to go to the USCIS in Atlanta but are you saying I can get it sorted at any Customs and Border patrol ? I ask this as there is an office in Alabama about 15 mile from where im living and would save me a 5 hour round trip

yes, any CBP (Customs and border patrol) office.

going to 'DHS' is useless.

going to USCIS is useless.

The only office that can fix name problems in the SAVE database is CBP.

Today I called my local Customs and Border patrol about my name, when they went through there computer they telled me everything was right and I shound not have a problem getting my SSN. Going to the SSN office I was yet again told they needed more info as my name is wrong :/ , asking what info I needed I was told " I have no idea" this was from the manager of the office, after telling him Customs and Border patrol say everything was correct on their computer he put my name in again and this time it went through, I collect my SSN tomorrow and my card will be with me within 2 weeks.

using a telephone is bad.

should go in person.

however - if the SSA clerk did a NEW SAVE db lookup on you today and found you, and put through the application, great !

come back tomorrow, you can get your number.

OMG this is the exact same thing that happend to us today. Went to Department of Homeland Security, they said everything is right in their system. Send us over to Customs and Border patrol, they also said everything in their system is right. Went back to ssn office and showed them a phone # and name to the supervisor at Customs and border patrol office he wrote down on the I-94 form and boom all of a sudden everything is fine. Also something about the lady yesterday not being experienced so I guess they went t another computer and put in the name in there and they said we will get the card in 2 weeks.

By the way what do u mean "collect my ssn tomorrow? do you mean you can find out what your actual # is before it comes in the mail and how?

Yes was told my card would take 2 weeks to arrive, I want the number so I can go open a bank account and sort out my driving licence so was told " come back tomorrow as the system updates over night" They will only give me the number NOT the card I have to wait for that to arrive in the post

Absolutely ! come back next day, after applying, and you'll get the #. Not the card, but the #.

Who cares about how long the receipt is good for? Your SSN remains the same forever, so now that you have it, MEMORIZE the number. If someone wants to see my actual card, they are going to have to wait for me to go to the bank and get it from the safety deposit box. I think I have shown the card a total of 3 times in my entire life. Just rattling off the number is good enough for most people. The only other thing you may have a probelm with is that some employers use an old verification software and your SSN may come up as in valid. THAT might be the case where showing them the card occurs.

Good luck and congrats on getting the SSN,

Dave
