Hello everyone! My sons ages 21 and 19 are already permanent residents for 5 years here in US. They will go back to Philippines this year to finish their college education there, they have Re entry visa. My question is, can they still apply for a US Citizenship after they finish their college in Philippines? They expect to be finished in 2018 hopefully. Is there any cause of delay for them to apply US Citizenship if they get out of the US Country? Please if anyone had experiences the same as our case, kindly share. I greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Can they file for citizenship before they go to school? when does school start? I mean because if they file for citizenship and they get approved. Once they are citizens no one can tell them how long they stay in the philippines. They won't even need a reentry visa. The problem is if they go to the phillipines and they stay more than a year that five year they have been here will not count. They will have to stay here another five years. File it now and then send them to school.

Hi Silkafi88,

Thank you for your reply. actually they will go to Philippines this coming October 2013,(Fall) to attend college. I did not file citizenship for them because i thought once become a US Citizen, they can only stay a certain amount of days in Philippines. My mom is a US Citizen and she's told to stay only in Philippines for 27 days, she has to come back here in US after that. I am so confused. Anyway, can i still file for a citizenship for my sons even if their Re entry visa is on the way now? Or if they will stay in PHil. for 10 months, can they still apply for US Citizen as soon as they come back here in US?

Have a good day!

yes you can still file right now and have teir citizenship done once and for all (I highly recommend that). I don't know if the phillipines allow dual citizenship specifically with the US, if they do all your kids have to do is enter the phillipines with the phillipines passport. for a PR you have to stay less then 6 months out of the US in order to not to have a hard time with immigration when you get back. More then a year that will reset your residency clock to 0.

I think your mom went to the phillipines with her US passport, then they will let her stay only for a limited time. But as a citizen the government cannot tell you how long you can stay there. If you go to the phillipines with a phillipines passport you can stay there as long as you wish. I mean people travel but honestly sand this is my point of view why would you send your kids to the phillipines to finish school and reset their clock and have them wait 5 more years after the years they spent in the phillipines. Making them wait here for 6 months until citizenship is done in the US then they can go to the phillipines with no worries. I'm happy I helped and I wish you and the kids all the best. Good luck.
