Thank you captain Google. I got as far as you saying Prednisone was not an injectable , and stopped. It very available and often used in allergic reactions, that may have a protracted outcome. It also has some undesirable side effects.

Mainly a chronic case of the munches. :P

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself

Blood sugar, weight gain, etc etc. Not a good drug to take for a just in case. Most dermatitis with a food allergy goes away as quickly.

How deep you want to dig? Google and the internet in general were not necessary for my reply and I could get waaaaayyyyy more detailed and technical with you without needing to use references. And when I do use references I avoid getting all the mis-information that a google inquiry would generate. I have far better and more reliable search tools available for those obscure and unusual clinical situations that we sometimes encounter.

As to undesirable side effects, you are right. But then even aspirin or acetaminophen can kill you! Used correctly those side effects you may have read about can be avoided in all but the rarest circumstances. I would be far more worried that if the epi-pen was actually necessary that when it wore off you might suffer fatal consequences like your airway closing up completely. Of course, if the epi shot was only to give a brief respite from some itching, it was probably medically unnecessary in the first place and therefore everything else beyond a simple antihistamine (Benadryl) would also be unnecessary.

Prednisone is only available in oral forms. It is not an injectable drug. The injectable steroid used most commonly is methylprednisolone. There are others including dexamethasone.

My thought to you is to just concede because you are way out-gunned in this area.yes.gif

I always keep Benadryl handy at home, and in the truck. The nature of my work means I will get bit and stung by a variety of insects, or scratched by various botanicals and manmade surfaces. It doesn't take much for me to produce a histamine reaction anymore. As far as an effective antihistamine, that one was the only one recommended to me over and over by medical personnel as the first thing to reach for. It does has a pronounced side effect in some people- it causes drowsiness. I used to carry the Benadryl sticks, but the capsules work fast enough. I still have a bunch of bee sting ampules, but never had to use those.

It has always been one of the most effective antihistamines for allergic reactions. The more expensive non-sedating (actually they should be thought of as 'less' sedating) antihistamines are significantly less effective for most people. If benadryl by itself does not take care of the symptoms try either switching to Vistaril (sometimes people get habituated to a particular antihistamine and it loses its effectiveness till you have been off it for awhile) or maybe adding Zantac (it is also an antihistamine but in a different category than benadryl)!

Well I had already given 76 mg of benadryl. Then 4 hours later given 38 more mg. She awoke about an hour later complaining of not being able to swallow and was almost head to toe in hives. As soon as she said "can't swallow I hauled asap to the ER. With that symptom and Benadryl already having been presented I don't think EPI was unneeded. Hence my comment I thought another shot of Benadryl was not needed.

Prednisone does not come in an injection form.. wanna bet

P.S. I got a whole bottle of it if you want it. I also got 6 bottles of NUVIGIL , but that is another story She did not take it and was fine. We also ate crab again the other night and she was fine.

I will coincide you seem to be more knowledgeable than me in this area

Trying to get rid of the wife? She has a reaction involving hives and inability to swallow which you believe to be an allergic reaction to crab. You allow her to get an epi injection and benadryl but won't give her the steroid prescribed. Then you get her to eat crab again soon after! But this time she doesn't react. Maybe next time but you probably need to wait a month or two to get the biggest reaction possible. Even then you never know with allergic reactions. If she does have a fatal reaction you might be able to convince the jury you are innocent by reason of ignorance!

Ok first of all. No one let's my wife do anything.. She does what she wants

She wanted to try crab again because she has been eating it her whole life. She had no reaction.

She did not have an inability to swallow, just complained about 6 hours after onset of symptoms she had a slight feeling. At that point I think you would agree it's time to go to the E.R. I think you would also agree that when the only symptom was hives, trying benadryl and monitoring closely was the way to go.

As for the Prednisone. That was 3 weeks ago at least. We did not take it and have had no problems, so i guess i was right.

You are also dead wrong about Prednisone not being available in injection form

Got a tooth pulled today. .Got amoxicllin and hydrocodone.

I will not be taking the Amoxicillin either.

That's your fault. You should have married someone from a RUB country. They do the dishes naked and do what they're told.

I swear you guys and poor Ol' Gary LOL

It's odd how age mellows us. I am very ok with a assertive female. She has a way of making you want to do things she orders you to do :)

What did she order you to eat for breakfast this morning?

and when will she order you to use a PC with a keyboard on yer next VJ visit?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.
