I just can't see it happening. Not everyone can afford PC's, there isn't access to "electronic" banking in many areas in the world, including the USA; Hicksville anyone? :P What about the third world? They certainly don't have access....if you are going cashless, it has to be the majority, not the minority.

The demand is not there for a cashless society. Not yet anyway!

hey hey hey... Life takes Visa.... or is it Life takes Mastercard? I dont remember the commercial, but anyways, I agree that Somalia probably doesnt have too many ATM machines, but the USA is definetely well into the process of going completely cashless. If it already hasnt. Id have to look real hard to find a place that doesnt take card.

Yet the USA doesn't have anywhere near as much electronic banking as the UK...e.g. direct payments et al.

hmm... interesting. I pay all my bills online. Comcast, sprint, Geico. I also manage my discretionary allotments to go into a seperate bank account to be deducted out for my car payment. I dont know who you are dealing with here. Perhaps Unkel Bodunks Bank of Hicksville?

direct payment... I call those allotments. And i dont like them too much, cuz if you get a bill that is a fluctuating one, and they automatically deduct it, and they make a mistake, charge you double, or something crazy, they can overdraw your account, that is if your poor like me. :D I just use an allotment for my car payment, cuz its a fixed amount. But well, not everyones as poor as me. But i did pass with my I-134 without a co sponsor. Go me! super :star:

Well, in the UK, they are called direct debit. You pay a set amount each month and the banks are not allowed to take any more. THEY sign an agreement saying they won't too!

I find it invaluable. I haven't had to worry about a utility bill for years. The service provider (gas, electric etc) works out how much approximately your yearly bill will be, and then sorts out a payment that would cover you. If, after a year, you are paying too much they lower your payment. You can claim back the excess from them at any time.

You know what I think sucks and made me really mad  When you go to book into a motel and they will only accept a credit card. I have never in my life seen anyone knock back cash prior to that

well that doesnt sound like too bad of a system that the UK has got going on then. Plus the beers not too bad in the UK. I do find it odd to have beans for breakfast though.

Only a few have beans for breakfast; mainly with a good fry up. The majority of us have toast or cereal! :P

wow thats real strange... They wouldnt accept cash at all? Or did they just need the credit card for deposit?

Nope, they would only accept a credit card for full payment up front. Hubby and I were both livid.

I think it is an excellent idea. The UK has different coloured notes and they are all different sizes. £5 is the smallest, going up to the £50 which is the largest. Blind or visually handicapped people can easily tell our notes.

Our coins vary greatly in size, texture and weight.

I'm going to miss the UK money. USA money is, IMO, a little boring. All the same green (apart from slight variations), same sizes...and I REALLY find it hard to tell what is what.

D used to say when he visited that our coins here looked flimsy and fake...like play money for kids. I never understood that til I moved there and then moved back....wasn't used to seeing US coins & for a few months it fascinated me how fake they looked.
