Cary - I'm sorry for your loss. I was estranged from my mother from the age of 11 to her death. I sometimes thought to step in and try to repair things or do the Christian thing and sling forgiveness - but it was only thinking. I did learn how to shuck off the resentment and quell my desire for revenge, so that was a plus.

It's on you to show up at the funeral/whatever - but note that's mostly not to honor that person, it's more for your relatives to see you there. Closure is optional, and sometimes attendence can do that.

I'd go actually, but his wife has chosen not to have one. Maybe next summer there will be one, but we'll have to see.

I take its been a while since you last spoke to him

Spoke to him at my grandmother's funeral. Before that was my grandfather's funeral. He drove my brother and his wife to both quit facebook because he was constantly writing nasty tirades on their walls.

The time I finally got fed up with his bullcrap, was when he was having thanksgiving dinner at his golf club. My wife, child and I were invited, and it would only cost me $75 per person! That's $225 to have thanksgiving dinner at his golf club, where he was required to spend at least $1000 a month or get billed for it anyway. I know, because he constantly bragged about the exclusive club he belonged to and the rich people he played golf with all the time. At the time, I was very broke, had just graduated and started my career three years earlier, had just bought a house, had a two year old child. No way did we have $225 to spend on a dinner. This was mid 80's and that was a lot of money for us. By today's dollars, it would probably be at least $500. I guess he spent a major part of the dinner talking about what a horrible son I was for not coming and helping him cover his monthly $1000 bill at the club. He called me up afterwards and continued his tirade about how worthless I was for not coming.

All my dealings with him were like that. Either you bowed down and told him how great he was, while he bragged about all the things he did or the famous people he met, or he was bashing you over something.

I think I've mentioned that my father is jealous of his own son, and is very selfish. The most important thing to him in his life is money. And at 82, he still tries to get rich daily.

I can't even stand to sit down with him to have a meal.

I'm his only son.

I'm his only son.

After leaving home when I was 15, I was already working and basically supporting myself with but rent when I did, he promised that if I'd move home, he'd put me through college. When college came he never contributed one cent to my education. Even when I'd hit hard times and asked to borrow some money, he never helped with a cent. Guy would ask for my help all the time to, help do this, fix that, whatever, he was constantly hitting me up for help. Then when I would need some help, not one bit would come. Once I was out of work, the company I was working for went out of business, I asked to borrow a hundred bucks until I found a new job, I was still a student, and he refused. Instead he gave me a box of freezer burned polish sausages so I would have something to eat. Then starting bragging about his upcoming vacation to Hawaii with wife number 3.

What really burned my butt, was when his step son with his third wife had to go to college. My father paid everything for a private out of state college, so the step son wouldn't have to be distracted from his studies by working. He bragged about how much he was spending to. Can you even imagine how I felt?

You know my father?

Is your name really Andrew?

Terrible story. Oh we'll, at least you have a great wife now.

Why did you leave home at 15?

Why did you leave home at 15?

I left home because he slammed my head through a wall, threw me down the steps into the basement, then ran down after me and was kicking me in the face.
