or offer free baklava.

I make the baklava myself. I learned to cook a lot of Greek food, and this was one of them.

I'm glad I didn't wipe out either. I've been a bit gunshy for driving and am contemplating carpooling with the hubby tomorrow for that freezing rain. But I managed this morning, even past the same spot I spun in.

You stay safe yourself! :)

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

-Qur'an, Al-Infitar, Surah 82:1-5

I bought some excellent baklava last night to drown my sorrows in. mmmm...haven't worked up the courage to make it yet, but it's on my list of things to do once my paralegal certification is complete, huzzah!

Ooh where do you buy baklava in MN? :o I want some Middle Eastern goodies without having to resort to making a mess in the kitchen and failing miserably.:whistle::D

To ensure the completion of my hijacking attempts...

Baklava

Nut Filling

1 1/2 pounds walnuts, roasted, unsalted, coarsely chopped

1 cup sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

Syrup

1 cup honey

3/4 cup water

1/4 cup sugar

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 small lemon peel piece

1 small orange peel piece

1 piece cinnamon stick, 1-inch thick

Dough

1 pound phyllo dough

1/2 pound margarine, melted

********

Preheat oven to 350F.

Nut Filling: Combine all ingredients, set aside.

Syrup: Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and let simmer for 10 minutes. Let cool. Discard peels and cinnamon.

Dough:

Unwrap phyllo dough and fold in half, like the pages of a book. Keep covered with a dry kitchen towel (or plastic wrap) while working.

Turn over one sheet onto 10x15" cookie sheet. Brush with melted margarine. Continue turning sheets (pages) and brushing with margarine until 1/3 of the sheets have been used.

Cover with 1/2 of the nut filling. Brush another 1/3 of the pages and place over the nuts in the pan.

Top with remaining nut filling, and then continue with the remaining sheets of phyllo dough. Brush top sheet with remaining margarine.

With sharp knife, score pastry into diamonds, squares or triangles.

Bake 35-45 minutes until puffed, crisp, and deep golden in colour. Remove from oven and immediately pour cooled syrup over baklava.

Let stand 4 hours. When cool, cut through to the bottom layer in scored cuts.

(Eat copious amounts. :P )

mm thanks! When I first made it I had never used phyllo dough and it was a little frustrating beacuse it is so thin but it wasn't too hard. We have no markets here that sell it so I make it from time to time. I'll have to try this recipe next time.

Thanks!
