Thank you for your response lost_at_sea. I followed the link you added and below is what the USCIS case status checker says :

Your OS155A, IMMIGRANT VISA AND ALIEN REGISTRATION was accepted and is being processed at our intake processing center. On September 4, 2013, we mailed you a notice explaining this and describing how we will process your case. Please follow any instructions on this notice. You will be notified by mail when a decision is made, or if the office needs something from you.

I'm hoping the above means that there just sending my ssn and green card number through the post? I suppose mailed means sent through the post?

Yeah, mailed means through the post. Check that again next week and see if there's been any progress. :) Sounds good, though.

My wife got hers within 3 to 4 days i think after it changed to optimized...in fact there was a couple day window where the USCIS case status website actually gave the tracking number too.

now...the SSN - we went and applied for that - got that within a week after applying - do yourself a favor - only takes a little time to take your passport and go to your local office.

my two cents smile.png

Good luck - congrats and welcome to the US!

Wow that was quick lubnajavid!! Mine only went to optimized a few days ago, which is nearly a month after I entered the United States.

I was thinking about heading to the social security office but thought I would wait it out at least a month since I arrived as from what I gather the waiting time to receive your ssn/green card can vary from a few days to weeks. Just didn't want to receive two ss# because I was impatient. Plus since it went to optimized I thought it best to give it a few days to see if anything comes through the post...

What other documentation do you need to take with you so the social security office can send you a number? Is it just your passport?

And thank you for the kind welcome smile.png

I brought our applications already filled out, our passports (with visa to show status) and our birth certificates.

They need two documents to show age/identity.

For my wife they only needed to see her passport (main page) - so that showed her identity and then they also needed to see the immigrant visa page also.

That was all we needed - did not take any other form of identity at all.

Thank all for your advice regarding documentation needed to get a ss#.

My green card arrived in the mail today, but I still haven't received my ss#

I'm not sure whether to contact USCIS just in case it's gone missing and see what they say? Or just head down the social security office and get one from them.....

You should just go to the SS office with your green card. USCIS has nothing to do with your SS#.

Also the SSA office can and will double check if one has been sent to you. But generally speaking, if the SSN is done properly by the gov't then you would have received it in within 3 weeks of POE.

I have not received mine im here in the US for 1 month and 2weeks now. I even went to social security office two weeks ago to apply personally. yesterday my green card arrived and i went today at the social sec office hoping that they could give me ss# but they said they are still waiting for the immigration to confirm my status and they cant give us a Ss# yet. Omg from the very start this immigration is giving me a headache. Others get these gc and ss# easily. this makes me feel so lucky... Zzzz i hope despite these, good things will happen in return :)

You should find the nearest CBP office and correct anything wrong with your SAVE database. That is your problem most likely. Your green card is wrong right? So that needs to be fixed. Was your visa done correctly?

The reason I was concerned whether the ss# had been posted was because when I checked the status on Friday the 6th September it said

And when I went back on the site the following Monday it said that my card had been posted on the 9th via usps and gave me a tracking number.

So I don't know what was posted on the 4th because it never arrived.......

USCIS has pretty much nothing to do with your SS#. I had the same status and all I ever received in the mail was the PR card itself.

you should go back to the SSA office, and ask for a SAVE database lookup in your VISA name or A#.

If a problem - you'll learn of it right then, and right there.

-----

If you learn of a problem at the SSA office, you should get into CBP office and get your entry record fixed. Yer existence in the USA all hinges round a proper record, on you, in the SAVE database.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
