April 7th 2014 - Elis fee paid

May 14th 2014 - My wife POEd at ORD

May 22nd 2014 - Applied for SSN

June 3rd 2014 - SSN Card received (8 Business days from application date)

It has been 31 days now since POE and still not "Optimized" on ELIS. Should we contact USCIS?

Also, does the fact that my wife was able to get an SSN mean that the guys at POE entered her data into the USCIS system correctly? Or does the social security office just look at the paper visa and not consult any USCIS database?

The SSA office may or may not consult the USCIS database. They will if you specifically asked them to look her up in the SAVE db, and some do it anyhow, but sometimes they don't.

A month isn't too long to wait. I wouldn't call the USCIS yet. Last person was at 2 months. Really before 3 months you have no reason to worry. At about 6 months you start to worry and call your congressmen. At 9 months you make an infopass to get an updated temporary green card and really should be finding out what the heck is going on.

I sigh at this sometimes... really I do. We shouldn't have this much of an issue with any of it, and yet there always seems to be a next step or person who's waiting to be informed because they just don't know or don't care to. I'd like to not have to educate people on the immigration process, but I don't think it's something most people would know about unless they have to go through it either, so it'll continue to happen whenever we want SSNs, driver's licenses, bank accounts, credit cards, jobs, etc...

Yeah, I think this is part and parcel of the "moving in" process, it takes a while to settle in & having to deal with such frustrations should be overlooked considering how far we have come in the process.

If a DS-260 was used - then the SSN was issued because of automation after POE.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

If your SSN doesn't come within 2-3 weeks of POE you can go to the office and get one.

Takes 1-3 months to get the GC.
