Actual Study: http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=18319&page=R1

The study is the same one linked to in the quoted article, which begs the question "does it support the OP's POV?"

And if anyone thinks I am going to read that thing on an iPhone, think again.

It's like 123 pages long and each page takes fooooorrrrreeeeeevvvvvveeeerrrr to load ClockWatch2.gif

Maybe if I have another slow day at work tomorrow I'll give it a go. Problem is, I'm heavily, heavily biased on this subject and statistics aren't likely to override personal experience. I grew up in areas of the south where the good ol' boys had a scary disregard for firearms safety. It doesn't help that the pro-gun advocates I've known here in Illinois weren't really any better... one was complaining about how her husband "could've gotten arrested for saving someone" because he shot his gun into the air in the middle of the south side of Chicago to scare off some teens who were beating up another kid. Then there's the whole thing about how a friend of mine shot and killed his father when he was five years old because his parents didn't properly secure their handgun. Maybe I just have really bad luck in my acquaintances, but, yeah, my opinion on this matter is quite colored.

The actual report is a mixed bag. It fits neither Obama's nor the NRA's narrative all the way but comes down somewhere in the middle.

If you read other posts I've made on gun-related topics, I'm no fan of gun proliferation, either.

Unlike the UK, however, America has had commonplace gun ownership since independence and the Constitutional right to do so for almost as long. The genie is out of the bottle and has been for a while.

The misplaced attempts to restrict weapons choice and magazine/clip capacity only serve to restrict the capabilities of law-abiding citizens. The bad guys tend not to obey the law anyway.

Guns are not the problem. People are the problem. Guns are just tools.

I agree that - as most things in real life - it's not all black and white.

Do you agree than that Obama camp is not completely truthful to citizens.

The numbers and argument they have projected are not complete truth.

Was merely saying I'm probably not considered the most unbiased interpreter based on my personal experience.

Luckily, today has been too busy at work so I'm absolved of the responsibility anyways ;)

I'm actually not 100% against concealed carry, but I would prefer to see a HELL of a lot more training requirements, with regular "refreshers", in order for the permits to be issued or renewed. Even then, I wouldn't be 100% happy (the south side gunslinger I mentioned before has years of training and experience with firearms) but I would at least be more comfortable with that.

Regarding the rest of it, others have already made arguments against these points, and I'm sure you're familiar with them, so I'll spare you the repetition, except to say: Our country has put dozens of genies back in the bottle, and will likely continue to do so, whether it's on this subject or another.

What numbers are you referring to?

All the stuff that Obama and Biden / Bloomberg have been trying to say far to convience general population guns are the cause of these killings etc.

If you don't want to agree Obama and his camp have not been completely truthful to citizens... thats cool too.

I can only agree that the Obama Camp needs to dig a new latrine, as they've filled up the current one.

Camping is so fun !
