10 Reasons You SHould NEver Accept a Diamond Ring from Anyone

I didn't get a diamond ring with my first marriage.

For my upcoming marriage... well... of course I'm not going to die if I don't get one but like many others, I like sparkly stuff.

I'd never get a huge rock like so many women get, I'd be afraid of hurting it or losing it or someone stealing it, but just a tiny little sparkly might be nice.

I'm really not sure we have the money for a "real" diamond though, and after reading this thread, I guess I might be okay with a manufactured one.

Just as long as it's sparkly!!

:P

I read an article here this morning that described a new diamond substitute called moissanite. It's apparently a much better copy of a diamond than CZ and doesn't cloud over time. It's also a bit more expensive than CZ, but vastly cheaper than a diamond. Worth checking out.

LOL, that article also features the sentence, "It's affordable, and unlike precious diamonds, women can travel with their bling without worrying as much about the pieces getting lost or stolen."

So that's a word that's ok to use in the newspaper now... I see...

It's pretty remarkable, too, moissanite. It doesn't have that waxy look that c.z. gets.

I had wanted a sapphire solitaire. Colored gems are much more beautiful.

Wow, moissanite is pretty expensive. Might as well get a diamond for the cost.

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. Oh goody! Now there's a great reason not to have a diamond instead of that we're just too poor!!

Thanks for sharing this information...

PS I haven't ever missed not having a diamond... I really treasure our matching silver bands that were made by a silversmith on the streets of Kathmandu while we watched. Together. I can't imagine anything else having more meaning to me, regardless of its supposed "value".

I've read all 4 pages, and I still love my diamonds :P

I've never actually purchased one, however. All that I own are gifts from others.

I guess I'm just "brainwashed"...

Our engagement ring is garnet and I love it. Diamonds stick out a bit too much for me, I like shiny but... not THAT shiny. :) Unfortunately, with the shape of it, I don't think we'll be able to get a wedding band that'll fit well with it... we'll see when we go wedding band shopping after he moves here. :)

I saw a synthetic diamond engagement ring and WOW... it was HUGE, and only $40 - 1 huge diamond in the middle, nearly the size of my knuckle on my pinky finger, with 2 smaller diamonds on each size - very beautiful, clear and super sparkley. A ring like that in real diamonds would've been insanely priced.

They sell these on QVC or HSN, can't remember, sometimes it's on in the background when I'm working...anyway, they look to be gorgeous from what I can see.

Wow, moissanite is pretty expensive. Might as well get a diamond for the cost.

The point is to find alternatives in order to not participate in the things Alex originally posted, not necessarily the price.

Kimberley Process - Google that. There is an effort in the world to attempt to clean up the blood diamond trade. There are a lot of African Countries who are attempting to make sure their diamonds are mined correctly and humanely. I dunno. I guess I'm a sucker for tradition. I agree they appear overpriced, but I guess I still want one. AND YES to the CDN diamonds :) That's awesome, but I'm biased!! :) I heard a radio piece about this and they said you should always ask where the diamond originated, if you can't get good info, don't buy it from the jeweler. Just my 2 cents!

My wedding rings were my mother's. She had a 1 carat cluster as an engagement ring and a simple gold band. When she died, they came to me and I asked Joel if he minded that I wear them as my wedding set. He had already given me a blue topaz set in silver as an engagement ring...I didn't want him to spend a bunch of money on me. This visa process took a lot of our resources and I would have felt selfish expecting him to purchase a diamond ring. Now, I wear his engagement ring and Momma's rings all on the same finger.

Nah...I'm not brainwashed, not even by the flashy pictures of those not-so-real copies. I'm just thinking of the bigger picture. For what a real diamond ring costs (what a lot of women expect as far as size) we can have a nice downpayment on a house. I don't need "bling-bling" from my husband to know he loves me and I certainly could care less what other people think. What I have was given from the heart...and that's priceless.

Still, people are like racoons. They want shiney stuff, and whomever has the most shinies gets to be top fluffball.

I prefer to be thought of as a magpie!

(Like other corvids, such as crows, the Magpie's usual gait is a walk, but when attracted by food or any special object it hops quickly sideways with wings just open. The fondness of all its family for bright objects is well known.)

SHINYSHINYSHINY! My wedding dress is ALL BEADED - that's how much I love the sparkly bits.

I don't have a diamond, don't need a diamond, and don't WANT a diamond for all the reasons listed above... (plus we couldn't afford it, and I would have felt TERRIBLE if my partner had spent all that money on a stupid stone.) I'm quite happy with my cute little antique-style cz set in sterling silver... I wear it on a chain around my neck, and nobody has ever questioned its nature in four years - they're surprised if I tell them it's not a 'real' rock.
