In our household, CAPS often gets distracted by shiny objects...so the phrase "Oooh, shiny" is used a lot.

Like in those movies/shows where some professor would take out a shiny object and put someone into a trance by them watching the object. :P

Something like that. In our house it's usually something more like throwing a wadded up piece of tin foil for the cats...and there's CAPS all distracted...

Gift shopping for him must be easy. :jest:

Very! LOL

They can easily be grown synthetically for industry.

I'll agree with that. Although I'm not sure (as I'm by far not an expert) which costs more... mining them in slave-labor conditions or producing them synthetically.

Still, people are like racoons. They want shiney stuff, and whomever has the most shinies gets to be top fluffball.

Then again, I've never been a big jewelry nut... my ring is one of the only pieces of 'real' jewelry I have (other than one gold necklace and a string of pearls from my sweet-sixteen I've never worn).

Oooh Shiny!

i think that is the Crow, that likes shiny stuff...raccoons near me, like dog food

In our household, CAPS often gets distracted by shiny objects...so the phrase "Oooh, shiny" is used a lot.

I hope you're not comparing me to a crow, raccoon or dog food, Dean. I'll tell Sanita! :P

edit: For a comma error.

 no way.... i was comparing many of the other posters though

Ooh, shiny! :)

Thanks Dean!

Diamonds get more attention because they are truly a luxury item. We can argue about shopping at Wal-Mart and the damage it does, or whether clothes are from fair-trade companies, but at the end of the day you need to eat & have clothes. (I have a hard time tsk-tsking at a large family for not shopping at an overpriced local organic store when they don't have a huge amount of income.)

But no one is going to suffer for not having a diamond.

First of all, diamonds are just transparent coal stones. They are not jewelry.

And artificial diamonds are really cheap to produce (you can make them with anything made out of carbon).

I've never understood why people don't choose to buy really high quality synthetic diamonds. I mean, come on, isn't everyone after the size and the sparkle? You can get a fantastic HUGE synthetic for a couple hundred, then buy an engagement down-payment-on-a-house.

I like sparkly, and I like big stones, but I won't buy diamonds and other things are way more important to spend money on.

I've got my diamonds (in the ring), and I have already told Jerry that if he ever wants to buy them again for me, I want ones from Canada. Fortunately, one of the local jewellery stores now carries them, so he doesn't have to go far to track them down. :P

As far as my engagement ring was concerned, if he had asked me before he bought it, I would have told him diamonds weren't necessary, a nice opal or sapphire would have sufficed. I'm a simple girl.

I would've gotten my fiancee a diamond (the price was practically a non-issue), but she doesn't like diamonds (she says they're "cold" and "lifeless"), so we went with what she really likes and just happens to be in the corundum group, the second hardest stone (the absolute hardest is a diamond) on the Mohs Hardness Scale: a Ceylon sapphire.

Her ring was custom-made, since it became too difficult to try and find exactly what was "just right" in pre-made rings.

We also made sure to purchase it from a vendor that procures their stones and gold in an eco-friendly and conflict-free way. :star:

Now here is an interesting diamond- and you know exactly its provenance.

http://www.lifegem.com/

They will make one from your pets ashes too!!!

Very interesting. Do you know the difference between these diamonds and the ones sold by DeBeers? The pet diamond is better.

And these people make a living giving people a relief, abeit in a twisted way.

You see, diamonds are not hard to make, not expensive to produce and are better artificially than taken out of nature. Now, what's the difference between a artificial "fake" one and a real one?

The fact that the real doesn't really is worth anything besides helping dictatorships in Africa, or civil wars over there.

It is basically what the oil industry has made of the middle east in the last century. You can argue that you can't live without oil, but when it comes to diamonds most people are uninformed and alienated by the media.

The whole engagement ring idea was fabricated in order for one company, just one company, to profit.

I hope someone does that outta my ashes when I die (hint, hint)

Of course, diamonds that aren't conflict diamonds help bolster the economies of otherwise poor countries that desperately need the money and can (and do) do a lot of good with it, like South Africa.

Actually I don't like diamonds, the only reason I have one is that it was an heirloom that we got reset (what good does it do to sit in a drawer?). If it hadn't been, I would have wanted something else.

That is really interesting...

It is better than keeping someone's ashes on display.

That is shinny creative and can scare the kids.

I didn't get a diamond ring with my first marriage.

For my upcoming marriage... well... of course I'm not going to die if I don't get one but like many others, I like sparkly stuff.

I'd never get a huge rock like so many women get, I'd be afraid of hurting it or losing it or someone stealing it, but just a tiny little sparkly might be nice.

I'm really not sure we have the money for a "real" diamond though, and after reading this thread, I guess I might be okay with a manufactured one.

Just as long as it's sparkly!!

:P

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

-Qur'an, Al-Infitar, Surah 82:1-5
