Still, people are like racoons. They want shiney stuff, and whomever has the most shinies gets to be top fluffball.

I prefer to be thought of as a magpie!

(Like other corvids, such as crows, the Magpie's usual gait is a walk, but when attracted by food or any special object it hops quickly sideways with wings just open. The fondness of all its family for bright objects is well known.)

SHINYSHINYSHINY! My wedding dress is ALL BEADED - that's how much I love the sparkly bits.

They can easily be grown synthetically for industry.

I'll agree with that. Although I'm not sure (as I'm by far not an expert) which costs more... mining them in slave-labor conditions or producing them synthetically.

Still, people are like racoons. They want shiney stuff, and whomever has the most shinies gets to be top fluffball.

Then again, I've never been a big jewelry nut... my ring is one of the only pieces of 'real' jewelry I have (other than one gold necklace and a string of pearls from my sweet-sixteen I've never worn).

Oooh Shiny!

i think that is the Crow, that likes shiny stuff...raccoons near me, like dog food

In our household, CAPS often gets distracted by shiny objects...so the phrase "Oooh, shiny" is used a lot.

I hope you're not comparing me to a crow, raccoon or dog food, Dean. I'll tell Sanita! :P

edit: For a comma error.

My engagement ring is a garnet, he gave me his signet ring as a token after a spur of the moment proposal. I refused to let him replace it with a diamond. Thankfully the diamonds I do own are all antique.

Close-enough (for government work) Dean, the actual bird is the magpie (basically a crow with a longer tail and some grey colouration to make it somewhat more attractive); but there IS also a mammal which likes shiny stuff--the packrat, also known as the trade-rat (because it'll oft drop some worthless item it's carrying such as a pebble or a piece of glass in exchange).

The basic crow and raven actually are like STRAY dogs--they like carcasses and rubbish.

First of all, diamonds are just transparent coal stones. They are not jewelry.

And artificial diamonds are really cheap to produce (you can make them with anything made out of carbon).

To put in a perspective: You can produce a diamond stone big enough to be "worth more than" US$1.000.000 with the same amount of energy you produce 500 aluminium cans.

Edit: Diamonds = Global warming does not exist (But it was really easier to make people buy those stories in the 30's)

There was a really good article in Wired magazine a couple of years back about synthetic diamonds but they made it sound like it was just as costly as the natural and the Diamond cartel started this campaign many years ago to continue to brain wash people about how synthetics were bad and some how inferior the synths are to the ones nature produced.

They are a luxury item tied to emotion. Buy them if you want dont if it bothers you.

There are many things in this world that we puchase that have blood associated with them, the shoes and clothes that we buy that are made by child labor. Is that any worse? I dont know, there are many injustices in the world each of us has to decide which ones we can fight.

I try not to judge I try to offer alternative points of view.

You see, I don't have to buy nike shoes. I don't have to buy at walmart.

I choose to buy something/somewhere else because I am aware of their background.

But you can't buy diamonds from someone that isn't DeBeers. And diamonds have false value.

I really can't buy something that I know is inflicting pain into other human beings.

Like in those movies/shows where some professor would take out a shiny object and put someone into a trance by them watching the object. :P

I'm pretty damn sure there's LOTS of things that inflict pain that you buy & don't know about.

Something like that. In our house it's usually something more like throwing a wadded up piece of tin foil for the cats...and there's CAPS all distracted...
