Would it not make more sense to have a flat tax or consumption tax that is fair and even and do away with the huge complicated bloated tax code that favors the rich and corporations.

I am ok with that.. Also have a cut off. Maybe the first 18K for a two person household is not taxed or some other figure

Exactly. Determine the existential minimum and leave that alone. Every dollar after that is taxed a percentage. No exception, no deduction, no exclusion, no off-shoring, nothing. I think we'd all be surprised how low a tax rate we would come up with.

That's right. The moneyed interests have purchased the tax code the way it is. Which is why their share of the tax collection has gone down so much. We regular folk are the suckers in this game and it ain't the poor that make out like thieves. It's those that can afford to purchase special tax code provisions from Congress.
