Me too, Brother Dean.

Charles, you got me searching. This is what my model says:

If you have 4WD, a full-time system puts power down to all four wheels

at all times. Some refer to this as an "all-wheel drive" system, rather

than 4WD, but AWD usually refers to "reactive" systems that delay

transfer of power until after slip is detected. The drive system

is most correctly called "Full-time 4 wheel drive." It is reported that

25% of the engine power is normally sent to each wheel.

- For automatic transmissions, there is a center coupling that

detects wheel slip and gradually locks the front and rear axles as

the slip increases. There are no driver controls for this feature.

So there you have it. It also says that for this vehicle on the 2WD models, they're rear wheel.

Electricity is really just organized lightning.

that last part says it all - you were in rear wheel drive mode then. any way to lock it into full time 4 wheel drive during those driving conditions? that would prevent spinouts like today. (F)

Investigating that. Unfortunately I never got an owner's manual on this so that's my newest project.

Doesn't 'slip' refer to something that happens when you have traction, which you don't have any of when skating on ice?

I've always understood it doesn't matter what you are driving when you hit ice. Front wheel, rear wheel, all wheel or high altitude.

rear wheel can push the backend of the car sideways on ice. front wheel, as it's pulling you, is much safer. of course, nothing beats full time 4 wheel drive in snow/ice.

note of course that none of those drive trains will help you stop quicker :P

So we had a snowfall here last night but all the roads to work were clear. I drive on a 3-lane freeway where max speeds are 70 mph.

Why the heck would they allow speeds of up to 70mph in a state which receives so much snow?? Even 50 miles is too fast..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Heavy snowfall here in western WA is rare, and why when we very occasionally get these freak snowfalls, things go to hell in a handbasket quickly. Speeds are lower in more snow-prevalent areas of the state.

And despite the roads being bone dry, I wasn't going 70 mph either.

glad you're ok (F) ...

I hate driving on icy roads  .....

they tell me that even in Chilliwack, (where I am from) they have 3 to 4 foot snow drifts and it is -11 C and windy... We hardly ever get that kind of weather there... My sibs didn't have school yesterday or today.... :o I remember having one or two snow days in the 3 years I went to school there....

Yeah, we didn't get anything near as much at Seattle/Tacoma or the 20" or so that fell in Vancouver BC. There's actually more at my house than here at work, and that's only like 3".

Oh well, as all my business contacts are in Seattle and most not in the office today, I'm sitting here vegetating. Good day for it, as I'm pretty not focused.
