Why does the image of the 12 tribes of Israel wandering in the desert come to mind?

Because you're using the wrong reference-point (one which had nothing to do with Iraq ground-realities).

The one you need to use is that of the British going into Afghanistan in 1839.

"There's one thing I'm not going to do, I'm not going to pull our troops off the battlefield before the mission is complete," he said in a speech setting the stage for high-stakes meetings with the Iraqi prime minister later this week. "We can accept nothing less than victory for our children and our grandchildren."

Bush is delusional and a bit of a revisionist (or as the Repubs like to say...a flip-flopper).

Attention turned Tuesday to a giant "Mission Accomplished" sign that stood behind Bush aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln when he gave the speech May 1.

The president told reporters the sign was put up by the Navy, not the White House.

"I know it was attributed somehow to some ingenious advance man from my staff -- they weren't that ingenious, by the way," the president said Tuesday.

Now his statements are being parsed even further.

Navy and administration sources said that though the banner was the Navy's idea, the White House actually made it.

Bush offered the explanation after being asked whether his speech declaring an end to major combat in Iraq under the "Mission Accomplished" banner was premature, given that U.S. casualties in Iraq since then have surpassed those before it.

During the speech in May, Bush said, "The battle of Iraq is one victory in a war on terror that began on September 11, 2001, and still goes on."

How many SUV's do you own? You'd be cry'n the blues if you had to wait in line for 2 gallons of gasoline (rationed) every other day to get to work just to find that you no longer have employment because your employer's been shut down for the same reason; no energy to operate.....

You need to ask why?

"No wonder the cab fare from the airport into Baghdad is now running around $35,000 for the 25-minute ride. And that doesn't even include a friggin' helmet."

I own zero SUVs. When gas got above $3/gallon here in sunny SoCal I started riding my bike to work more.

My employer is a defense contractor. So as long as the Army & Air Force need our products, I'll be OK TVMFA.

Hell, I *want* gas above $4/gallon. At that level things like tar sands become economically competitive. And then we'll be buying our energy from Canada, not our enemies.

bc it keeps bush from doing work. all he does is say the same thing over and over, as long as he satisfies himself, he dont care what the rest of us think. and im sure that alone tires him out. i would bet he pats himself on the back everynight before he goes to bed thinking everyday he does something good.

See my earlier reference to the British 1839 invasion of Afghanistan.

Also, look at the map a bit. Bush Jr. wanted Iran to be bollixed (ok, Khatami rather than Nejad was president in 2003--but the basic remains):

  • to west, you have NATO-member (presumably EXTREMELY US-friendly) Turkey (also Sunni-majority who don't like Shias and maybe helpful) and US-occupied Iraq (a real mess, but presumably you can play on Arab-Persian animosities)
  • to east, US-occupied Afghanistan and presumably US-friendly Pakistan (both Sunni majority hostile to Shias--definitely manifested oft in Pakistani cities such as Multan, Lahore, Faisalabad, etc.)
  • to south, Arabian/Persian Gulf which can be sealed with carrier battle groups (narrow accessway out)
  • to north, Bigmessistan (my name for the collection of muslim countries formerly part of Soviet Union), an unknown quantity but probably don't really want Iranian domination

In other words, he wanted to set the stage to invade Iran and "reverse" Iranian revolution by putting Shah's family back on throne (nevermind that the last time, it only bought US 28 years--and resulted in a MORE HOSTILE regime taking over than the one overthrown; this time even if successful, nowhere near as long lasting).
